The best receivers of low pitches all have different set ups and styles, but they all seem to: 1) Pre-Pitch movement down below the strike zone 2) Beat the ball to the spot 3) A single motion towards the strike zone

On every play/pitch, you have a choice to make. You can devote your attention to the good outcome you want or you can devote your attention to avoiding a bad outcome you’re afraid of.

The internet is flooded with people who are getting in arguments over what “cues are better for hitters. Seems like an enormous waste of time and a bunch of people leaning into their own biases. How can anybody possibly know what cue is better for someone without knowing anything about them?

“Analytics” without coaches = blind. Coaches without analytics = guessing. Both are just using observable data. The separator? Interdisciplinary communication with a shared value of finding what matters. That’s where championships are built. marketable quote tho lol

AUSTIN HEDGES, CLE - This isn't just another session of sitting behind a machine and catching balls —it's a masterclass in pushing the limits. People watching might not fully grasp just how fast this move is; it's high velocity on another level! He might miss one, but that's not the point. The key is his mindset: constantly looking for ways to move even faster. The takeaway here is to embrace failure. Don't get down on yourself. Stretch your limits and find out what you're truly capable of.

Early in my time managing, I had this crazy idea. I wanted to know how many decisions I made in a day as a manager. So I had an intern follow me around with a pitch counter. You know, the clicker. Every time I made a decision, I'd point my finger and he'd hit it. It was kind of comical. If Steve Martin and Martin Short were doing it, it'd be hilarious. But it was me and this kid, just pointing all day. We started at 1 o'clock in the afternoon. By 6 o'clock - five hours later - I asked him, "What's the clicker say?" He goes, "You made 181 decisions." 181 decisions! And I still had an hour before game time. Then I'd have a whole game to manage. I looked at that kid - I think his name was Will - and said, "Will, can you believe I've made 181 decisions? Do you think I made every single one correctly?" He's like, "Wow, no, I never thought of that. Probably not." He was afraid to even say it. But I said, "You're absolutely right. There's no way I'm going to make every decision correctly." That opened my eyes. I needed to find a way to lean into other people that are smarter than me in certain areas to help me make better decisions. Sometimes the best leadership isn't having all the answers. It's knowing when to ask for help.

This is an incredibly interesting chart. League Batting average: 2000 - .270 2024 - .243 Is hitting getting worse or are guys just facing better stuff more consistently? There is a big need to crank up the difficulty in our training to emulate what you see in the game.

A little sneak preview into how much the increase in leaguewide pitch quality has killed offense. Still trying to figure out the best way to show all the data and thoughts I have on this...
