i am one of only 15% of autistic people in employment. i’m also incredibly privileged to be self-employed and able to work from home. even *that* is exhausting and regularly leaves me too unwell to get out of bed. full time employment is simply not accessible to autistic folks!

ITV news wanted to speak to me about my experience as a late-diagnosed autistic ADHDer… but only if i was able to immediately drop everything and travel to london on zero notice! news flash: that isn’t inclusive or accessible to the vast majority of neurodivergent folks!

@IAmIronMan42522 Hello 👋 I have realised that this platform doesn’t work well for me due to such limited space to write. So not using it so much.

@ItsEmilyKaty It would be great for there to be a proper research study about the experiences of autistic people who have ended up in the MH system. What they were actually experiencing and what was actually needed. Seems the obvious way to design the missing services.

I genuinely think a great deal of what landed me in a psychiatric unit aged 16 was autistic burnout. I was exhausted from masking and from life, but nobody recognised my undiagnosed autism and the needs I had.

@NuffieldTrust @Quality_Watch It’s great to see you leading on this and hear about the Taskforce. Need a focus on autism without LD as well as with. As much an issue as access is quality of assessment (not culturally sensitive) and access to support, which doesn’t exist for adults. Would love to contribute.

@AnnMemmott Bloody hell. How about maybe just believing that people wouldn’t risk their reputations just for a laugh. I also disclosed at work as soon as I found out, thanks to the online autistic community, and would absolutely do the same thing on applying to new jobs.

@AutisticCoach_ I like an hour to wake up slowly and get out of bed. Then about 30 mins of pottering before I have to do anything. But I don’t actually always have that much time. It’s just what I like best.

@AutisticCoach_ I had a total meltdown once when a dragonfly got trapped in a spider web high up on my house outdoors. I was beside myself. Cried and cried and thought about it for days. I think it’s linked to cptsd. 🤷‍♀️

what part of autism is crying when you kill a spider?

@CatJacobs7 Yes I think this is typical for us too. I think we are accepting of other people’s truths, but that doesn’t mean we want to spend time with all the people. ✨

Do my #ActuallyAutistic comrades find themselves having deep & significant empathy for others in general, but much less for those closest to them? If so, you are not alone. Why do we think this is? #AskingAutistics
