Every year thousands of kids across our country are turned away unfairly or illegally from public schools. That has to change. It's time to ensure public schools are available to all kids. Join us in this fight: availabletoall.org #AvailableToAll #PublicEducation

Myth-Busting March MYTH #3: “School choice increases segregation.” Let’s be honest: School access has been tied to ZIP code for decades. And ZIP codes are tied to income and/or systemic redlining. School choice breaks that link. Research reviews show choice programs often improve integration—or have no negative effect. Choice doesn’t create inequality. It gives families a way out of it. @Available2All @afcpress @valeriagurr Myth #4 next week.

.@rweingarten: Education is the great equalizer. @DianeRavitch: Your local public school welcomes everyone. Are these statements actually true? In progressive New York, the answer is often no. 🧵

“Public schools must be ‘available to all on equal terms,’ and … if you look at the system we have across the country, you can see that we are falling so far short of that — and the primary reason for that is that we assign kids to schools based on their address."--@timderoche

Many school attendance zones in New York City, upstate New York, Westchester and Long Island are similar to 1930 redlining maps, the report shows buff.ly/NYULztA

The most segregated public schools in America? New York. And across the state, attendance zones that mirror 1930s redlining maps are keeping kids out of better public schools--often just minutes away. More from @The74 on our new report: na2.hubs.ly/H04llfh0

🗽 New York is progressive through and through. So how did it become the “epicenter of educational segregation”?

"Notably, just 1.1 miles from P.S. 16 Wakefield is Bronx Charter School for Excellence 3, with 512 students—96% Black and Hispanic and 80% proficient in reading. Rather than seeking access to another mediocre nearby public school, efforts should focus on expanding schools like Bronx Charter School for Excellence 3, which delivers excellent education to most low-income and minority students." thebiggerapple.manhattan.institute/p/educational-…

Here’s the catch: students at “persistently dangerous” schools have a federal right to transfer to safer schools But when no schools qualify bc of how offenses are defined, students effectively lose that right More in @nypost: nypost.com/2026/03/11/opi…

The common thread: these reforms loosen the link between home address and public school access. Exclusionary attendance zones would no longer have the final say over a child’s education and future. What other steps should New York’s policymakers take to open up public schools to all children? Read the full report: availabletoall.org/report-and-sta…

✅ Require coveted public schools to save at least 15% of their seats for students living in other attendance zones or districts. ✅ Give all students the opportunity to apply to any public school within 3 miles of their home address. ✅ Stop prosecuting parents for using a different address to enroll their child in a better public school.

This was @NYCSchools response to our new report, And Stay Out! Here’s the thing: it’s hard to guarantee every student “access to a high-quality education” with a system built on exclusionary attendance zones. So what reforms could state leaders take up to expand opportunity for all students? Here are a few options for the legislature and @GovKathyHochul ⤵️
