I don’t hate Makaton, just dislike Makaton. Don’t learn Makaton, LEARN BRITISH SIGN LANGUAGE.

Trying to learn BSL. My nonverbal autistic child is picking up BSL better than Makaton so I’m now trying to find signs that could teach him. I know most of the alphabet (can someone explain why Z is the way it is?) but I’m trying to pick up words he would find useful too.

@AxelNorth1 @JackieTainsh @lumpybird Makaton doesn’t cost anything. It’s not complicated enough to require training resources. It emphasises functional communication to help teach PURPOSE of communicating. Once past certain developmental milestones children more on to other forms of language if capable including BSL

Why do mainstream teachers need training in SEND when for decades parents have been told that they are trained and experienced in SEND? Were those all big lies?

@theoldiek1 Appreciate your comment. Makaton is so important for children and adults that struggle with communicating. 💯

"I’m just like you, even if I don’t look like it." 🎶 This song hits differently when you’re used to wearing a mask. Signing this felt like a moment of true honesty. Whether you’re neurodivergent, disabled, or just feel "different," remember that your value is internal. Check out the full video with $Mask below. ⬇️ #Unmasking #MakatonSigning #Accessibility #InnerBeauty

@Yasoob1254227 @mog_russEN Its hard to so that under so much stress. Baby signing (Sing and sign in the UK) was a godsend! Babies can understand and physically communicate with basic makaton sign language long before verbalisasion. Being able to communicate basic needs saves so much pain on both sides

@JackieTainsh @StarlightMcKenz @lumpybird You can speak if you use SSE (British Sign Language with English orders). There is no evidence that it is difficult for disability learning children and adult. You can use SSE because of BSL. You don’t want to see your child said “Good Hitler”, believe that Makaton is messed.

@StarlightMcKenz @AxelNorth1 @lumpybird My lad learnt makaton so he could speak with his sisters, but only in private and he dropped it the moment he didn’t think they needed it of him. People don’t get how reasonable adjustments can make kids look very odd and different and no kid wants that!

@StarlightMcKenz No, they can use BSL because Makaton signs came from BSL. No excuse if SEN or SALT said it is difficult but they understand BSL signs. Unbelievable SEN and SALT should be fired!

@AxelNorth1 @StarlightMcKenz @lumpybird No-one in the girls sphere used BSL, so that would have been beyond them for no point - they were 3 yrs old. I don’t really care about your preferences I just think reasonable adjustments just need to be reasonable and asking a TA trained in makaton to use it felt reasonable.

@AxelNorth1 @JackieTainsh @lumpybird It was the kid’s language. It is simpler than BSL and is often a more effective way of getting a child to communicate when they have a communication rather than language disorder. If it is too difficult they will resort to a less desirable behavioural language.

@StarlightMcKenz @lumpybird My kids school refused to use makaton, even though it was my kids 1st language. They didn’tthink it that reasonable or necessary; my kids couldn’t talk and had a language disorder. They did point out that all the staff knew how to support the kids and even had makaton training!

@macnamara60 @EastieOaks You're welcome. I remember a sweet moment they had with young Leo. She was surprised he knew Makaton sign language (think he had a younger brother with special needs).

I ask this without knowing who killed Ray btw. Would #Emmerdale really make Rhona a killer on top of having to deal with what will come from Graham turning up 🤔
