Where are we now with Iran The new Iranian regime’s supreme leader says enriched uranium is not leaving the country.  Isn’t that a tripwire? We hear nothing about the issue of ballistic missiles, which is a huge issue. Nothing about the Iranian people. And nothing about what real enforcement would look like, given the regime has no intention of adhering to any deal in the years ahead. The regime is also declaring victory based on the ceasefire and its constant extensions. It doesn’t believe we’ve the will to restart military operations or keep up the economic pressure.  It’s well aware of the midterm elections and the pressure to get a deal. It also seems like the issues on the table are being narrowed to reach a deal.  I’m basing this on reports as well as experts who understand the Iranian regimen’s ideology and tactics.

What does Israel gain by purposely dragging the US into a “long and costly slog”? Nothing at all. The threat was real and President Trump was willing to take the political hit for doing the right thing. You show your lack of respect for the President by continually pushing the idea he is puppet of Netanyahu. He cannot be led anywhere he does not believe is in our best interests.

It should be obvious by now that Israel’s goal was not to actually come up with a viable regime change plan, but to convince the Trump administration that they had a plan. Israel’s primary goal was to get us into this war, knowing that once we were in it we’d have a hard time leaving. So far their actual plan is working. Israel is comfortable with Iran spiraling into chaos & this war being a long & costly slog for us. Until we realize that Israel has drastically different objectives in this war we will be stuck in the current cycle.

The NYT article reveals that our military is telling President Trump what has been obvious from the onset of this war: there is no quick military solution in Iran and our early actions set the conditions for the stalemate we are in now. Trump’s best option is to declare victory and walk away now. Limit our exposure in the region, reduce the risk of Iran restarting the war on their terms, and reset negotiations with sanctions relief as both carrot and stick. The Iranians have adapted to our attacks. They can “win” simply by not losing. Future strikes will be less effective, cost us more in casualties, and further harden Iranian resolve. Killing the Supreme Leader rallied the Iranian people around the regime. By also eliminating many moderate leaders, we’ve left ourselves with mostly hardliners to negotiate with, who are unlikely to give Trump the concessions he’s demanding. Two lessons we should have learned in the GWOT: 1. If you stay within reach of the enemy, they will adapt and ultimately win the long war by grinding us down. Iran is doing this on a massive scale with ballistic missiles, air defenses, and drones—the same concept as IEDs, just more advanced. 2. Attacking a nation will rally the people around the regime we’re trying to overthrow, or around forces far worse. Regime change is a fool’s errand.

@LindseyGrahamSC It's hard to believe. It's hard to think about. 330,000 children go missing in America every year... meaning they are kidnapped... Then some people think that America can save the people and children of Iran by war and bombing.

I have every confidence that President Trump fully understands the situation with Iran and will not continue to tolerate a refusal to negotiate in good faith along with Iran’s defiant aggression in the Strait of Hormuz and throughout the region.  It is abundantly clear to me that Iran has been very weakened militarily and economically. But at the same time, they have become more emboldened and aggressive.   A short but forceful response now would reset the conflict in all the right ways.  When it comes to Iran, it is imperative that we negotiate from a position of strength and dominance. We must finish what we started. I fear continuing negotiations without a forceful response prolongs the conflict, gives our allies doubt and will further embolden the Iranian terrorist regime.
