These phone calls made in 2011 by the Tunisian dictator as he fled the country to Saudi Arabia Arabia give that saying its true meaning. While he was minutes away from landing in Saudi Arabia for exile, he kept working the phones looking for evidence that things were good so he could return. Yet, his presidency was water under the bridge then. Even his own pilot disobeyed him in the end, Saudi became his permanent home till his death in 2019!
The thing is, most dictators don't even realise they are dictators. They think people love them genuinely - like they have no choice but to - that they’re, in fact, doing the people some favour no one else can do. In a way, they fee like they’re making a great sacrifice by being the rulers. Since elections are rigged, & independent polls don't exist, they even never realise that they are not popular with the masses. So, when power begins to slip away from their hands - as it always does eventually - they believe something will happen to bring it back to their hands - after all, they are God’s anointed person to lead over the ungrateful masses!
Hence, even as Amin fled the country, he kept giving the impression he was still in charge. Then there was the ridiculous press conference by Robert Mugabe after he was overthrown where he still sounded like the president, and called upon people to vote for the opposition candidate.

Update: At first we couldn't locate it for about 45 minutes but then it started ringing.. Islands are particularly difficult terrain to search for. Complicated. Quite inaccessible and overgrown with a lot of scree, that is to say, stone, karst without olives😅 and always hot😅👇🏻

A Syrian artist living in Berlin posted a video now trending across Germany. Germany welcomed Syrian refugees during and after the civil war and have no colonial past in Syria to atone for. What do they get in return? Resentment, a Third-Worldist rant basically about Western colonizers as eternal oppressors. The contrast with Syria itself is what makes this interesting. Syrians inside Syria today want the West. They want a peaceful Damascus, a functioning banking system, trade, integration into the global economy. The loudest anticolonial voices and movements now sit in Western capitals advocating for things their own people aren’t aligned with.

Syria: One of the Assad regime's most despicable murderers arrested
Syrian regime security forces managed to capture Amjad Alyousef - one of Syria's most famous wanted men - in an operation in the city of Hama last night.
Alyousef was captured on video leading the "A-Tachaman neighborhood massacre" in Damascus, during which dozens of civilians (some of them Palestinians) were brutally executed from a mass grave into which they were instructed to jump.
Alyousef was a symbol of the Assad regime's cruelty - especially after the video documenting the massacre was revealed a few years ago.

🖊️ This guy brings in a regular-looking pen he’s been using every day. He says people kept telling him it was gold, so he finally brought it in to the jeweler.
The jeweler reveals it’s solid 18k gold with real diamonds and sapphires. He says the gold weight is a little over an ounce and the gold value alone is around $4,000 — then offers him $5,000 on the spot.
The jeweler even joked that he’d keep the pen just to sign his checks.
Do you think this guy should sell the pen at $5k? They didn’t even mention what the diamonds and sapphires were worth.

🛒 Flea market find to $8,720 cash — just like that. This guy bought what appears to be a vintage cigarette case and lighter at a flea market. He thought it was for makeup, but when he brought it into the jewelry store they opened it up and you can tell they’re both thinking the same thing… this is definitely not what it appears to be. They test the gold, weigh it, and the jeweler offers him $8,720 right on the spot. The two of them are laughing like they just pulled off the deal of the day. It’s such a pretty piece though! Anyone know what this thing actually is?
