@annatyzack, reporter at The Daily Telegraph, has picked up BASICS Treasurer and Board Director Rowley Cottingham's comments on caring for people with heat stroke during this hot weather. “Heatwave dangers and what happens to your body – minute by minute” — The Telegraph article Hot weather can kill in many ways — but simply “cooking” in the heat should never happen. If you feel too hot: ☀️ Get out of direct sunlight 👕 Remove a layer of clothing 💧 Drink water 👀 Keep an eye on those around you — they may be struggling too. Share drinks and check on others. If someone starts getting worse, watch for warning signs of heat illness: • Extreme tiredness or weakness • Feeling intensely hot and desperately wanting to cool down • Dizziness or feeling faint • Headache • Muscle cramps • Nausea or vomiting • Heavy sweating (or, in some cases, dry skin) • Intense thirst • Fast pulse • Passing much less urine than usual, or very dark urine These signs mean the body is struggling to regulate its temperature. Actively cool the person and encourage fluids if they can drink safely. The danger point is heatstroke. Heatstroke is a medical emergency — as serious as cardiac arrest. Once someone becomes confused, agitated, has a seizure, or their level of consciousness drops, their brain is being affected. Their body is overheating and organ damage can follow. 📞 Call 999. While waiting for help: ❄️ Cool them immediately — use cold water, a hose, a bath, or anything available. 🌳 Move them into shade. 👕 Remove excess clothing. 🤝 Reassure them and keep cooling. Cold is what you want. It is difficult to cool someone “too much” in the early stages — the priority is stopping the overheating. Just keep them safe and avoid drowning, falls, or injury if they are confused and distressed. If you find someone collapsed and unconscious in hot weather, consider heatstroke alongside other causes of collapse. Stay cool. Look after each other. telegraph.co.uk/health-fitness… #BASICS_HQ #HeatWave #StaySafeInTheSun #Summer #PHEM #PreHospitalCare
