Asking for a friend @hisa_us @jockeyclub… Why is Lasix allowed for horses 3yo and older in maiden, claiming and allowance races, but not for 2yo and stakes races??? Can you please explain the science??? 🤔 Are you using the same science behind the 6-strike crop rule???

@TomRyanKY Could lasix no longer being allowed in stakes races coupled with the mentioned rise of purses for allowance races also keep connections of a slight G3 type horse not wanting to try stakes company because they know the horse's issue? If a G3 is 200k and alw is 120k? @RepoleStable

There's a lot of commentary on short fields and races scratching to 3 or 4 runners today… The shortage of graded stakes horses is being felt nationwide, and while the problem is real, a few concepts could make participation easier and more attractive for everyone. The nomination process is costly, and often pointless—we pay for nominations to races a horse never even runs in, sometimes getting billed months or years later. Nominations should be free for all. Providing racing secretaries with a better understanding of the available player population. Entry timelines also create unnecessary barriers. Many stakes races close entries five or six days before raceday—even before a horse’s final workout. This system pressures connections into guessing rather than making informed decisions. A more flexible approach would help. Nominations should be free everywhere. Entries should close 5 days out, allowing horses to complete their final breeze Black-type races at every level are vital to the sport’s health and long-term success. Instead of allowing them to wither, we should restructure incentives to encourage stronger participation. Currently, on the East Coast, rich allowance and claiming races—from Kentucky Downs to Keeneland and Churchill—compete directly with stakes races. In some instances, purses for these allowance events match or exceed those of graded stakes, naturally draining depth from our most important races. Allowance races are valuable, but people don’t come to America to buy allowance horses—they come to purchase black-type horses. Another obstacle is logistics. The lack of a strong, viable equine air transport network makes it challenging to ship horses efficiently between coasts. With reliable and timely air routes, trainers could look for opportunities in under-filled races across the country, rather than watching horses sit idle simply because they are based too far away. Finally, scheduling matters. Too often, multiple Grade 1 races run on the same Saturday at different tracks, forcing riders, trainers, and owners into difficult choices. This dilutes fields and disadvantages horses whose connections want elite jockeys. A better system would be to stagger premier races between Saturday and Sunday. Tracks offering the richest purses should secure Saturday slots, giving the sport the best chance to showcase its stars as well as its jockeys. Graded races are the backbone of the Thoroughbred marketplace. If we want to preserve their status and strength, we need to rethink how they are structured, scheduled, and accessed—making them easier to enter, more attractive to participate in, and more balanced against competing race opportunities. A little more cooperation between states would also go a long way..

@SwiftHitter Because Jose probably looked inside and saw a long odds horse and knew his biggest threats would be to the outside and floated the field wide, race riding. The rail might've been live, but he thought he had a better horse than the one to his inside, and he was wrong

@SwiftHitter What's the problem here other than not showing the full replay? Scylla was trying to angle outside (watch her head) and then the tiring Striker Has Dial staggered out, so went inside. Cut off Scylla's momentum while the winner cut the corner, this isn't rocket science

In the interest of horse welfare and safety, why are horses not allowed to tubed with electrolytes 24hrs before they race in the hottest part of the year? @HIWUNews @hisa_us

@BCombsRacing @raypaulick @JustADCohen So explain it better. It's a bad situation. For decades, there was a bipartisan understanding that allowing undocumented workers benefited the country far more than it hurt but the recent and unprecedented surge in "illegal immigration" partially led to this election result, no?

Based on some of the reaction to @JustADCohen Keeping Pace column on immigration, many people seem to think there is a very easy path for migrant workers to secure “legal” status or a work permit in the U.S. If only that were true. paulickreport.com/features/keepi…

@raypaulick @JustADCohen It's truly sad that it came to this. The country wouldn't have voted for enforcing the border and immigration laws if the border and immigration laws hadn't been so disregarded for so long and to such an extent

@jose93_ortiz As a trainer, there are so many variables in this, you've got 2 yo colts that don't pay attention all the way up to mares that need the guidance, but the jock to come back and say "I got to my six and I had to quit" that's race fixing in my opinion @ljlmvel

In case anyone is curious and has a dad like mine who forgot my throne (aka my beloved snuggle me) — a saddle pad and some standing bandages make for an excellent substitution.

We joked that it would be fitting for our daughter to arrive in a winter storm, just like the one we got married in. And sure enough, Catherine Frazier Combs made her grand entrance on Friday, January 10th, 2025 🎀
