@raclinton @dahvnyc Boards make bad decisions all the time. Seems odd for random folks to be so enthusiastic about shutting down a beautiful old church. Besides, have you been to the area? Tourists and transplants; keeping a community landmark for the locals who remain is worthwhile.

The fact that we're so easily seeing pages and pages of this stuff is insane.
I always accepted that whites were the majority for many criminal acts because... well, we're a majority. It's what you would expect.
But the data pool is obviously badly tainted, and by design.
We need a comprehensive, nationwide reevaluation of the data. Regardless of what we find.

As a giga-YIMBY I’m kind of sympathetic to that take. Living in a gorgeous historic architecturally iconic building can be a luxury good, while buildings created for efficiency and simplicity will house most people and keep their monthly costs low while removing some headaches.

New York City could have a population of 30 million like Tokyo. It just needs to be denser. Like Hong Kong. There are so many dilapidated and decaying areas of NYC that could be demolished and rebuilt to be dense. The Bronx, for example.

Taking advice from actors with no particular expertise on a topic leads to some really bad outcomes. So let's not do that. Let's instead consider some facts:
* The congregation that owns the church is dwindling and no longer needs such a large facility. So they, naturally, want to sell it.
* It would cost at least 20 million dollars to repair and refurbish the church. No one, especially the people that want to save the church, is willing to spend the money to fix it.
* Selling the church would raise $25-30 million to continue the philanthropic work that is one of the core missions of the congregation.
* Selling the church would also enable the construction of much needed housing in the UWS.
So let's stop listening to rich assholes who just want something nice to look at in the morning but aren't willing to put up any money to maintain it. That's just a bad path.
