The United States has carried out another airstrike in northwestern Syria, targeting and killing a senior member of Al Qaeda’s branch, Hurras al-Din (HAD). Some shit you should know before you read: HaD is an Al-Qaeda-affiliated group that emerged in Syria in 2018 as a splinter faction of HTS. HTS played a key role in the uprising against former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Eventually, they severed ties with Al-Qaeda to focus on consolidating power in Syria, a move that led to beef among some. HaD was founded by hardline Al-Qaeda loyalists who rejected HTS’s new approach and remained committed to Al-Qaeda’s global jihadist ideology. Primarily operating in northwestern Idlib province, HaD has been designated as a terrorist organization by the US since 2019 and has carried out attacks against Syrian government forces, Western interests, & rival militant groups. In an announcement, CENTCOM confirmed that it conducted an airstrike in northwestern Syria, killing Wasim Tahsin Bayraqdar, a senior leaded HaD. Bayraqdar was driving the silver vehicle pictured above. Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, CENTCOM commander, stated that the US would “relentlessly pursue and destroy terrorist threats” to protect its homeland and allies. The strike was carried out using the Hellfire R-9X missile, commonly known as the “Flying Ginsu.” This missile is designed for precision targeting and minimizes collateral damage by deploying six razor-like blades instead of an explosive warhead.
