War brings clarity, not only regarding friend-enemy distinction but also for others as it reveals our moral circles, their extend, direction, and who is in & out. That determines the price we are willing to pay and the risks we are willing to take. Human, all too human.

Sometimes people outside the field say things like “The AI situation can’t be that bad, there must be experts who are on top of it”. As “an expert”, I would like to be clear that we are *not* on top of it. Some key aspects of the situation IMO:

"Teachers are betraying their students when they inject activism into the classroom". Me in @TheHubCanada "Take school education down to its studs, and you’re left with the age-old three Rs: reading, writing, and ‘rithmetic. But, over the past three decades, we’ve built out that purpose to an enormous extent. “I think that’s what goes on in academia is this idea that somehow education is going to solve all of society’s problems, and they’re going to do it through sort of Neo Marxist theory,” says Reich, a PhD student at The Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) who researches the proliferation of critical theory in kindergarten to Grade 12 policymaking. Look no further than his place of study: OISE at the University of Toronto, the school that teaches the teachers who teach our kids. It’s here where Reich says the top-down ideological marching orders are delivered by educational policymakers in the province. This past March, the institution marked its 13th annual Decolonization Conference, entitled “Colonial ruptures: unmasking ongoing coloniality and fostering resistance and liberatory possibilities.” While teachers should cover various points of view, neo-Marxist postmodern critical race thinking shouldn’t be at the core of most courses, whether in teacher education or in Grade 2. But it is precisely this type of thinking that has become the motivating force for an increasing number of educators. And, as Reich describes it, it has moved from university faculties into teacher training programs and now finds itself inside K-12 classrooms. “It is urgent for us to reject colonial binaries that promote ‘thinking in hierarchies,’ eradicate toxicity and dehumanization and see education and social justice work as foundational to human liberation,” reads the conference literature. The aim is to “resist” and “subvert” the old system. Moulding the young minds of the next generation is key to the project. There are teachers who choose to look past these objectives. Then there are teachers who believed it was acceptable to take a Grade 7-8 field trip to an Indigenous protest billed to parents as an “educational opportunity…to learn about Indigenous activism, environmental justice and human rights.” Students were told to wear blue shirts that would identify them as colonizers. The protest would then morph into a rally about Palestinian liberation, denouncing Israel, with allegations that students were encouraged to take part." thehub.ca/2026/05/22/tea…

The plan of the leading AI companies is to: 1.) hire software engineers and AI researchers to build AIs that can automate software engineering and AI research 2.) use automated AI researchers to go >100x faster at figuring out how to automate everything else. 3.) End up with AI superintelligence that would be smarter than everyone at everything In short, use humans to build powerful AIs and use those powerful AIs improve AI recursively and rapidly... until we get a superintelligent 'successor species' that then obsoletes all of humanity. This plan sounds insane and sci-fi, but it's very much on track. It used to be that if you were a top 1% software engineer you could get a job at Google, OpenAI, or Anthropic. Now, AI writes the vast majority of the code instead of humans. And thanks to all the existing automation, even these top 1% engineers don't get hired anymore. The bar is so much higher because AI can fill in so much. Where this goes is difficult to say with certainty, but we have no evidence to rule out massive capability improvements - including "superintelligence" - in even just a few years... due to AI companies being close to automating and accelerating very large facets of AI research.

It appears that vicious Anglo-Saxon chauvinism and the whitewashing of Russian Soviet era colonialism and cultural genocide are thriving at @UofT. They’re also itching for legal action.
