Very disappointed by the @nytimes framing here. Two allies of the Russian economy had their sanctions lifted, using the pretense of the oil price. Lifting sanctions on these two individuals will not make any difference to world oil prices. Its ludicrous and a gift to Putin

In March 2022, russian troops executed three unarmed teenagers in Mokhnatyn, Chernihiv region: 17-year-old twins Yevhen and Bohdan Samodii, and their friend Valentyn Yakymchuk, 18. Their sister, Zahatna, described the horror: “I ran up to Yevhen, but he was already cold… Valentyn was gone too, his body torn by bullets.” Bohdan was still alive. “I realized we couldn’t save Yevhen, but we had to save Bohdan… He promised me he’d make it.” He died on the way to the hospital. “They were my everything… dearer than anything else,” she said. “They just went to thank a neighbor for bread.” Afterwards, Zahatna brought the blood-soaked bandages used to cover her brothers’ wounds to their father in Poland. “He kissed those bandages and cried over them.”

In American strategic thinking, there are deep ruts that successive administrations fall into from time to time. In 1945, at Yalta, Democratic President Franklin Delano Roosevelt traded away the freedom of Poland and other Central European nations in exchange for Stalin’s entry into the war against Japan. Just a few months later, already after Roosevelt’s death, that deal was recognized in Washington as a profound mistake, and the policy shifted toward containing the very same Russia for the next half century. After the Trump administration became entangled in yet another war it supposedly did not want, it is difficult to have confidence in the long-term strategic foresight of successive American “geniuses.” In Central Europe, which remains the most loyal American ally on the continent, we understand very well what Churchill meant when he said that Americans can always be trusted to do the right thing....after exhausting all other possibilities. But if anyone in Washington were willing to listen earlier, here is a simple piece of advice: Russia seeks to weaken the United States and would rather live in a world dominated by China than by America. Attempts to gain something as illusory as a Russian alliance against China, at the cost of a real ally like Ukraine - which is actively resisting the expansion of Russian and Chinese influence in Europe - are not only misguided, but also undermine confidence in Washington’s elites as capable of rationally assessing the world...

How much is President Trump willing to forgive Putin? He’s helping the Iranians attempt to kill Americans, and Trump doesn’t seem all that bothered by it at all. It’s not even worth some harsh words. We’ve seen the president rage on Truth Social about Fed Chair Jerome Powell, actor and director Rob Reiner, or New York Times journalists who he keeps giving exclusive interviews. But no matter what Putin does, Trump never seems to get all that angry about him.

He was only 16. On March 18, 2022, Maksym Kishchyk was at home in Mariupol with his family when the shelling began. They ran to the basement. A fragment flew through the stairwell window and struck him in an artery in his lower abdomen. “Leaving the building was impossible. The shelling didn’t stop. Less than an hour later, my son died from blood loss. They carried him back to the apartment. My older son and I ran out when russian forces took control. We were promised Maksym would be buried, but he burned with the building. They even sent me a photo of the remains…” A week before the full-scale invasion, Maksym wrote in a school essay: “People remember victory but forget how to value peace… Human life is the highest value. Today, the russian government is an aggressor toward Ukraine, repeating the horrors of the past without learning the lessons of World War II.”

This CANNOT work. 1) the US can't give Ukraine to Ru; should be clear by now US would have to literally invade Ukr to help Ru. 2) if the US helped Ru in Ukr, Ru wouldn't become an ally; it'd simply ask for more of Europe and continue seeing the US as an enemy to be brought down.

@PopovaProf @chukurchuk How many drones did Ukraine produce in a year again? Seeing "Yoblik" videos by the 414th in which Americans are being minced by Ukrainian drones would have an impact at home. The idea of US "giving" Ukraine to ruZZia is simply impossible. Ukraine is a steel hedgehog.

It’s just that I can’t seem to find a free and independent Latvia on the map of Europe after 1945. Nor Lithuania and Estonia, for that matter

The opposite, actually. Poland 🇵🇱 has absorbed 2.5 million immigrants, more than 6% of total population, over the past decade plus👇. This includes around a million of Ukrainian 🇺🇦 refugees who came after Russia’s aggression. More than 70% of the refugees are employed and have contributed between 0.7 to 1.3 percentage points to Poland’s GDP growth in 2023 alone.
