THE TRAP Location: Bijainagar, Ajmer, Rajasthan Time: February 2025 Jatin Kumar walked into his minor daughter’s room. She was supposed to be studying. Instead, she was on a phone - a ‘Kechaoda’ brand mobile he didn't buy for her She was talking to a man named Sohaib When Jatin confronted his daughter, she cut the call in panic Shoaib didn't stop. He called back. 15 to 20 times When the father finally answered, Sohaib didn't apologize. He abused the father Shortly later, he threatened the girl to leak her private photos and videos he had stealthily taken He ordered her to come to the Bijainagar qabristan Jatin followed his daughter to the Qabristan. When they got there, Sohaib began abusing and doing obscene acts with her Jatin managed to rescue her but forced her to reveal the truth Turned out it was a pyramid scheme of exploitation and his daughter’s friends were trapped as well. THE MODUS OPERANDI On February 16 2025, an FIR was filed on complaint of Jatin at Bijainagar police station under POCSO Act Rajasthan did not have an anti-conversion law by then. It came into force only in October 2025 After investigation started, police found Sohaib was part of a coordinated Muslim gang preying upon specifically Hindu school girls in the locality The gang was blackmailing girl children with their images and videos They were also brainwashing them into following Islamic practices such as reciting Kalma and keeping Roza fast Sohaib was constantly pressuring Jatin’s daughter to have physical relations with him He would order her to meet him at certain cafes whenever he wanted He threatened to harm her and her family if she dared say no. THE DISTURBING EXIT CLAUSE Turned out that whenever the girl pleaded with Shaoib to let her, he would put a condition. "Introduce one of your friends to one of my friends and I may leave you alone." This ‘chain system’ was the most important part of their modus operandi. Even this option would be offered after much mental torture, police found Every girl who fell in the trap was given the Kechaoda brand phone. Eventually, more victims came forward an two more FIRs were filed. THE INVESTIGATION Investigation into the Ajmer blackmail-conversion scandal led to a spate of arrests – at least 10 adult men and three under-18 boys – all from the Muslim community. Hakim Qureshi, a former independent Ward Councillor, was also arrested. RESPONSE ON STREETS These arrests sparked massive unrest across Bijay Nagar and Beawar. Protest marches and shutdowns were taken out in several towns. Public outrage boiled over into violence. On three separate occasions, the accused were assaulted in the Ajmer district court. In one incident, a former Municipal Councillor was thrashed by lawyers and onlookers during remand proceedings. The Bijainagar municipality issued notices to the families of the accused to prove house ownership. They also sealed the gate of the Qabristan, prompting Waqf to jump in as usual. SEWA NYAYA’s RESPONSE With Sewa Nyaya’s support, Jatin Kumar has filed an intervention petition to defend the laws that CJP-Jamiat etc want to scrap He argues that his participation is necessary to protect the interests of minor girls and the social fabric Jatin Kumar is fighting not just for his daughter, but for all the victims of the trap. Some of them are from scheduled castes.
