There really is no limit to the number that could be handled at once because they could be distributed througout the various nodes running the software and percolate to the validators over time. But if you imagine someone dumping, say, a million transactions on the network at once, it would be quite some time before all of them managed to get confirmed by the network. The technology can ramp up to 1,500 transactions per second under realistic conditions. But the current live deployed network can't do that. And we really wouldn't want it to. The only realistic situation under which it would get 1,500 transactions per second today would be if someone was flooding it with junk. And then we'd rather have the transaction fee go up than make every node operator receive, check the signature, relay, process, store, and report to clients and wallets 1,500 transactions every second. That would raise everyone's costs to participate in the network. We wouldn't want to do that unless there was demand for a large number of transactions per second each of which has real economic value.
