According to polemical Wahhabi claims, Iran supported Bashar al-Assad in order to repress Sunnis. This is greatly misleading. In reality, the Iranian political establishment was split over how to react to the Syrian uprising against al-Assad. Half of the Iranian political establishment (including President Ahmadinjad) opposed supporting al-Assad, seeing him as an oppressive ruler. Others had a very negative view of al-Assad, but ultimately supported him to prevent Syria from falling under US and Israeli control. Their decision was also based on the rise of Wahhabi sectarian terrorist groups like ISIS, and their increasing influence on the conflict.
