Do you know what this is? Growing up in the -40 winters, Dad drove a '68 GMC with a manual choke on the dash as pictured. Every crisp winter morning, we'd unplug the block heater, fight with the unbendably cold extension cord, and then remove the Zenith TV blanket from the windshield that he had placed there the night before to prevent frost buildup. Easier than scraping. When it was time to start the truck, you'd pump the accelerator twice to prime the carb. Then you'd pull the choke all the way out with your left hand to set it full rich. Then you'd reach and crank the engine with the key, and as soon as it fired, you had to bump in the choke just a little way, lest you "choke" it too much and it stalls. Getting the perfect amount was a function of ambient temperature, humidity, and experience. What you're actually doing is restricting air entry with a mechanical flap over the carb. This causes it to pull more fuel from the metering system and run richer, which is required when the engine is still cold. Fancier trucks used bitmetal springs to automate the choke, but few things worked better than a manual setup when it absolutely, positively had to start.

It’s a problem I can’t seem to find reasonable critical views on SpaceX. Nobody reading the S-1 and saying “yes it’s a solid business with good growth potential but I think it’s overvalued for ”. Been stressing about this cable and pipe. They were buried where we needed to put fence up, but had no equipment to get them out. Neighbor happens to be driving by with a tractor and yanks ‘em outta the ground. Here they are stacked in our driveway. Huge relief. Love it here!

This salamander guy is named Sammy. He’s been living here for 2 years. I haven’t seen any others just him. I have never seen salamanders this far north in Michigan. But he found a home in my greenhouse the first winter. He’s much bigger now.

How many technologies are stuck in a local optima? Big loudspeakers basically peaked in the 1970s. Obviously we’ve gotten somewhat better, but it’s a lot closer to: “a couple % more accurate” than “the average person immediately notices the +50-year technological progress” Miniaturization has improved a lot, so has digital signal processing, amplification. But take a high end setup from 50 years ago, sit in the sweet spot at the same volume…it won’t feel radically different. I’m trying to think of other fields where the underlying principles were so mature that half a century of progress in materials/software/electronics is underwhelming. Camera Lenses seem like a good candidate. Non-electronic instruments is another; it’s not like cellos have gotten that much better in the last ~300 years.

Solid rebrand by Bob’s Red Mill. The new wordmark is well constructed - consolidates the name in a more natural space, so font and impact increases tenfold. Owning the color red, building better on-shelf equity across the line with a better brand block. But what about Bob?

@davepl1968 I like a carb, but not a quadrajet lol. Same with simple vac advanced dist, cool simple effective, but dual vac? I'd rather have a microchip + hall effect sensor

Have you taken apart and recurved a dual advance distributor? Have you looked inside a Quadrajet carburetor? One time, in the Old Testament, Moses rebuilds one, and even he has a few parts left over. You'd be crying for your microcontroller in about 3 minutes.

@Spottyroo Whenever possible, I take the wheels off a car, schlep them to the tire shop to get done, then put them back on myself. I don't care how long I've known the tire shop owner, I only trust my own torque wrench.

Decided to check today since I forgot to last weekend. After getting my tires balanced at “reduced cost big name tire store” I discovered that one tire valve stem cap Was missing, and one was about to fall off. Annoyingly I told them to leave the tire pressures as they were. So I had to find another chrome cap. Then I decided to check the torque on the lugnuts and one side started turning at 68 ft lbs consistently. The other side like 90 which is better at least. But I set them to 100 which is also spec. Can’t trust anyone but myself 🤷‍♂️
