🔸 May 3 - Saint Xenia of Kalamata ❤️🔸 Yesterday, we also commemorated the newly revealed Great-Martyr Saint Xenia of Kalamata. Forgotten for 17 centuries, she miraculously revealed herself in the 20th century to a pious priest named George Nasis who served in New York. During one of his customary periods of prayer, there appeared before Fr George a beautiful girl who announced herself as Xenia the martyr. She also bade him to have an icon made depicting her clasping a Cross. At first, Fr George kept this to himself, but unable to contain himself, he told his superiors about the appearance of St Xenia. They summoned scholars to search ancient manuscripts of the lives of the saints, in a vain effort to find this saint named Xenia. Just as the credibility of Fr George was waning, St Xenia was found in an ecclesiastical work titled “O Megas Synaxaristes” which comprised 12 volumes of the history of the saints of Orthodoxy by the monk Victor Mattheou. Mattheou’s work describes Xenia as having long, golden-blonde hair, and beautiful features (matching the girl who appeared to Fr George). She was born in 291 AD in Kalamata, Greece, and was raised with faith in Christ. From a young age she adorned her soul with fasting, self-control, prayer, modesty and vigils. She earned the admiration of her community by helping to feed the poor, widows and orphans - a practice which befits her name “Xenia” meaning “hospitable”. The lustful eye of the Roman eparch Domitian of Kalamata fell on the lovely Xenia. When the idolater proposed to marry her, she flatly rejected him, declaring that she would never desire any other bridegroom but Christ. Xenia was thrown into prison by the enraged eparch, and endured brutal tortures. She was beaten, starved, dragged by her hair, and suspended on a post while her breasts were cut out, and her wounds were burned with torches. During her tortures, an earthquake shattered the idols, and Domition was so enraged that he ordered the saint to be beheaded, and for her heart to be cut out. Her martyrdom took place in 318, and a divine fragrance came forth from her relics. She is the patron saint of those suffering from heart diseases.
