@paisiosdavis I asked ny priest this, he says he changes it during fasts time to the less flashy wood cross. Then he goes back to his metal on normally. I think its preference really

I know jeweled crosses must be awarded to priests. They can’t just buy one for themselves. But what about the wooden cross? Is it just personal preference?

@paisiosdavis @Tim_Andrews I have heard of this tradition as well among ROCOR, although in the OCA, that doesn't seem to be the practice. What I had heard was that it had started as a lenten practice to wear the wooden cross during the 40 days. I guess it is a matter of who you ask! 😉

St. Akakios the New of Kavsokalyva (1730) Akakios was from the village of Gollitsa in Epirus. He was a great Athonite ascetic, spiritual father and clairvoyant. Akakios had many heavenly visions. He gave his blessing to several monks who chose the ascetic feat of martyrdom. Akakios reposed in his 98th year.
