I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through Him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation He came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate, He suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins, and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. 🙏🏼

@papism101 They don’t have the “one” aspect of the 4 pillars of the true church; it would be a mess if someone tried to make one for the whole EO church 😂

Claiming to be Orthodox while denying that a Latin Captivity occurred, even if not in the sense of a widespread apostasy of the Church (nobody is saying that!), is like being Armenian and denying the Armenian genocide by the Turks. Imagine being a spiritual fifth column.

I'd like to add 7 points here. First off, the letter that "Pope Enjoyer" is quoting from was actually put into Imperial law and is a principle that we can prove from other sources if we didn't have this letter. For serious students, this is hardly the place to be inserting empty honorifics. It was Justinian's own law that the Apostolic See of Rome would have to take the lead in the examination of doctrinal disputes. The proof of that is seen in how Justinian took the greatest measures to force Vigilius to bend the knee to his will. Why go through that trouble if you can just dismiss the Pope? Rather, he wanted the supreme court of the Church to judge in his favor. Secondly, this Imperial rule reserving the authority of doctrinal disputes to Rome was being respected in Justinian's own way since he sought Vigilius to hold the presidency at the Council. In fact, initially, all of the Eastern Patriarchs signed the original anathema of the Three Chapters with the proviso that its validity was based on whether the bishop of Rome signed or not (w/ the exception of Zolius of Alexandria, whom Justinian simply replaced to find someone who would sign). Thirdly, Justinian actually thought he captured Rome's official approval with Vigilius's initial ratification of the 3 Chapters anathema with his "Judicatum". So when Vigilius changed his mind on this, Justinian held that the Judicatum retains its legal force from the hand of the Pope. Thirdly, the final edition of the Acts of 553 do not include any excommunication of Vigilius nor any restoration of his status to the brotherhood of bishops, as was done to Theodoret of Cyrrus @ Chalcedon, for example. A final edition was made of the Acts before Vigilius was allowed to travel back to Rome (a trip he never made since he died en route). Fourthly, Vigilius never admitted to any heresies. His letter to Eutychios of Constantinople and his 2nd Constitutum both make it clear that he was not guilty of Nestorianism, nor of violating the Council of Ephesus (341), which is what Justinian had accused him of. Fifthly, in Vigilius's 2nd constitutum, Vigilius doesn't appeal to the Council as having authority to annul his previous constitutum, nor does he defer to the Council's authority. Rather, as Price notes in his commentary, Vigilius takes over the Council's decrees and ratifies them in the name of St. Peter. Sixthly, the final edition of the Acts inserted the letter of Vigilius to Eutychios and his 2nd constitutum into the 8th session, in order to make it look like the check mark of "Papal approval" was there from the start, eliminating any shadow of doubt that the Council was truly ecumenical. Lastly, because of #5 above, as far as I know, no Byzantine in the 1st millennium (pre-schism) ever recalls a situation where a Council judged a Pope in Vigilius. The earliest case I can think of is, perhaps, Zonaras and Balsamon. If Vigilius was truly judged, excommunicated, and restored by a Council, it would have been *THE* go-to argument against the Papacy by the Byzantines during the schism. I can't think of a significant reference to it.

Ah yes, St Justinian, the Emperor who called the fifth ecumenical council, which said that Pope Vigilius was wrong. After a back and forth, Pope Vigilius repented and even compared himself to St Augustine for retracting his error. Nice pick 👍

Jesus was never in Rome so how could He establish the Catholic Church?
GIF
Javier Mulet ⚓️@JaviatlMay24217

@SlowpokeCon @freakycaliphate @allounnnn @grok Jesus never was in Rome. The church that Jesus founded was in Jerusalem and the first Bishop was St James. There has been a church in England probably since first century. The Church of England as we know today was reformed by Elizabeth I and St Thomas Cranmer.
