The Mob Had Torches, Not a Point I see people keep repeating in the comments on my posts. "Jews have been kicked out of 109 countries." Then someone proudly sends me "proof." Not just the 109 list. No, no. Now we have upgraded to: "The Complete List of the 1030 Jewish Expulsions in Human History." One thousand and thirty. Because apparently antisemitism has entered its Costco era. Bulk hate. Family size. Now with 40% more medieval footnotes. So I looked at it. And let me save everyone some time. It is not a list of 1030 countries. It is not even cleanly a list of 1030 expulsions. It is a pile of locations, wars, massacres, riots, deportations, forced conversions, political crackdowns, ancient imperial conquests, medieval city bans, biblical claims, duplicates, local restrictions, and "something bad happened near a bridge in 1472, therefore case closed." In other words: It is literally Jewish history. Presented by antisemites as evidence against Jews. Which is an amazing trick. Imagine making a list of every time a minority was robbed, killed, expelled, enslaved, scapegoated, ghettoized, converted by force, or driven out, and then saying: "See? This proves they were the problem." That is not historical analysis. That is blaming the fire for being repeatedly set on fire. A serious historian would separate categories. Expulsion. Massacre. Forced conversion. Legal restriction. Economic ban. Local riot. Military conquest. Voluntary migration. Myth. Duplicate entry. Later readmission. The antisemitic version just throws everything into one pot and calls it soup. And not even good soup. No matzah balls. No dignity. No citations worth trusting. That is the central con. They say "expelled" like it was a customer service dispute. Like medieval Europe gently asked the Jews to relocate because the vibes were off. But "expulsion" usually meant: Leave your home. Leave your business. Leave your dead. Leave your synagogue. Leave your books if you cannot carry them. Leave your debts behind so the ruler can magically erase what he owed you. Were Jews expelled from many places? Yes. England in 1290. France, repeatedly. Spain in 1492. Portugal shortly after. German cities and states. Italian territories. Central European kingdoms. Islamic lands. Arab countries in the 20th century. Baghdad. Cairo. Aleppo. Tripoli. Sana'a. Tunis. Algiers. Casablanca. Ancient communities, some older than Islam and older than most European nations, were pressured out, driven out, stripped of rights, attacked, dispossessed, or made to understand that "you may stay" came with an invisible asterisk and a very visible mob. So yes. The expulsions happened. A lot. But the lesson is not that Jews were guilty. The lesson is that Jews were convenient. Convenient taxpayers. Convenient lenders. Convenient outsiders. Convenient scapegoats. Convenient bodies between rulers and angry peasants. Convenient explanations for plague, debt, famine, corruption, defeat, and bad theology. We are currently surviving campus ideologues explaining colonialism between oat milk lattes. We do not need inflated math. The truth is already devastating. Kicked out of England? Fine. We rebuilt. Kicked out of Spain? Fine. We carried Ladino across the world. Driven from Baghdad, Cairo, Aleppo, Tripoli, Sana'a? Fine. We brought the recipes, the songs, the Torah scrolls, the memory, and somehow still argued over whose rice is correct. That is the Jewish superpower. Not victimhood. Continuity. So yes, show me the list. Then let's read it properly. Because it does not prove Jews were the problem. It proves the world had a recurring habit of blaming Jews for problems it created itself. And it proves something else too: Jews need a home where the answer to "where do we go now?" is not panic, exile, or prayer. A home where Jewish survival is not dependent on someone else's permission slip. A home where we are not tolerated guests waiting for the next ruler, mob, ideology, or hashtag to decide the lease is up. That home is Israel. And after 3,000 years, we are still here. Still arguing.
