Below is the typical outcome of an exam session for a STEM university course in Italy 🇮🇹. Seven students were admitted to the oral exam, where the pass mark is 18. Among them, three are underwater, three are floating around the pass mark, and one is halfway to what in Britain people call a C or B. The other fifty who took the written test scored so low that they will not be admitted to the oral. Leaving aside that in Britain the pass mark is 12, this very typical exam outcome is due to the persistence of the millenary tradition that university exams exist only to select the next wave of academics, and that failing 95% of your students does not mean a professor should be ignominiously fired, as they clearly couldn’t teach their students well enough.
