Why Ritual approach to on-chain AI is different Smart contracts are great at deterministic execution, but AI inference has always lived outside that world, on some centralized server the blockchain has no real way to verify. Most AI blockchain projects don't actually fix this. A contract calls an API, gets a result back, and the chain just trusts it. The actual computation never touches the execution environment. Ritual takes a different approach: it makes inference a native part of the chain itself. Instead of calling an external API, smart contracts call an LLM precompile, a dedicated address that runs inference as part of the protocol's own execution flow. The model runs inside a Trusted Execution Environment, which becomes the actual trust boundary instead of just trusting the provider. What I find interesting is that none of this changes the developer experience much. You still send messages, pick a model, set parameters, it looks familiar. What's different is what happens underneath: the result comes back through a callback directly to the requesting contract, so AI output can actually become part of on-chain logic, not just a value the app trusts blindly. It's not free. Running inference inside a TEE is heavier than just hitting an API. But that tradeoff is the point. Ritual isn't betting on making AI usable on-chain.
