Shapiro is doing what many Democratic presidential aspirants believe they must do -- bend the knee to the progressive identitarians convinced that Israel is the cause to end all causes.
Presumably, he's more sensitive to this, because he's Jewish, and he believes (correctly) that so-called progressives don't trust him because every Jew is a Zionist or a latent or potential Zionist, no matter how loudly they decry the "Zionist entity."
What he fails to grasp is that his very carefully calibrated balancing act -- announcing his Jewish identity while betraying the Jewish state -- simply reveals an underlying hollowness, a broken soul, and no one, irrespective of their feelings about Israel, wants a broken soul in the White House. (This is, I suspect, J.D. Vance's No. 1 problem.) We know that our politicians are flawed, that they lie and flatter and cheat, but we also expect them to have a core -- or, at least, we want to believe that, beneath all the layers of mendacity, there is a set of values, something immovable.
No doubt, many of our presidents and other electeds have failed on this count. But that doesn't change voters' expectations.

The statewide "audit" of Washington State daycare provider payments is a joke.
Even still, it projected there's at least $37 million in estimated fraud. That is a FLOOR for the fraud per year, as explained below.
The two biggest fraud vectors in the daycare scams that were revealed in Minnesota, and that folks like @nickshirleyy and @kristenmag and @camhigby and @choeshow have documented here in Washington State, on video -- include, but are not limited to:
1) False claims of providing daycare, when no children are present or visible
2) Daycare provider A enrolling Daycare provider B's children, and vice versa. In other words, double-billing the state for their own childcare.
So you'd kind of expect that a State Auditor might actually VISIT facilities? Nope. That's not what the statewide "audit" did.
The statewide Single Audit Report for the State of Washington (fiscal year 2025), released on March 30, 2026, focused its review of subsidized child care payments primarily on a desk-based examination of records rather than on-site visits to daycare facilities.
