YES! I’ve never had a hard time getting kids into Shakespeare. But if all you ever give them is Diary of a Wimpy Kid or some YA slop novel, then they won’t ever strive for the intricacy and beauty of Shakespeare on their own. This is why schools need to introduce great literature to students instead of “meeting them where they’re at.”

It’s not hard to get children interested in Shakespeare. Any child is interested in Shakespeare. All you have to do is read The Bard to him. But if you keep him on a diet of Captain Underpants or The Farting Dragon, he will, by ten, no longer be interested in Shakespeare.

Our corrupt Republican majority Supreme Court continues to do the bidding of their friends and family members in the legislature, in violation of our state constitution. The North Carolina constitution guarantees our children a sound public education, but the legislature refuses to adequately fund public schools. The NC Supreme Court just rejected the constitution and gave legislative Republicans the green light to keep starving our schools.

It’s probably in poor taste to say too much specifically about Justice KBJ. Her comments really speak for themselves. But it remains true that DEI systematically elevated a large number of deeply unqualified and unserious people to roles where they are now doing tremendous damage, partly due to sheer incompetence, partly due to the sorts of ideological factors associated with being a DEI beneficiary. The question of how we navigate unwinding this in the years ahead remains open.
