@WyxelC76 @patmart100 @capybaroness Why? Drug dealers taking classes at a community college is not some unheard of thing. A guy with a lot of money trying to move it into the next big thing is not some crazy reach. Won't say Mouzone doesn't play as over the top and like a scene from a bad movie.

@patmart100 @capybaroness Stringer Bell is a funny and ridiculous portrayal of a hood guy trying to become a «businessman». I think a lot of The Wire is flat in a sort of operatic manner, but him thinking he’s gonna make it outside the pond is a good joke.

Haven't you been reading Hickman? Not working a ton is kinda the point but they could be part time (or full-time even haha) arborists, painters, carpenters, electricians, plumbers etc. Artists, remote workers, bloggers / "influencers." Start a bar and grill or a gym or a community woodshop or something else the town needs. Liquor stores and mortuaries are needed anywhere. I dunno, the whole point of the $ 50k house thing is not having to work a lot and what income is needed could be generated in a lot of various creative and laissez-faire ways!

By my eye, I'd estimate that one can find a habitable, move-in-ready home for under $50,000 in about 10% of the land are of the United States. Certainly, there are parts of MI, MS, LA, OK, AR, MO, IL, IA, ND, NY, PA, WV, and a handful of others where it is possible. You'll just have to deal with certain drawbacks, such as isolation, low wages, crime, harsh winters, hot summers, etc. But it can still be done. The question is not whether it could be done, it's whether YOU want to do it. And the odds are very good that you do not. That's how the market works. But -- if on the off chance you think you might be the 'type' who'd thrive in one of these dirt-cheap houses, and are resourceful enough to make ends meet in such places, you can live the most "low-cortisol," high-time-preference lifestyle imaginable in human history. For a certain type of fellow -- you might say 'an elite few' -- it's the best way of life that exists in America, if not the world, because you won't be stressing about the bills, answering to a boss, or living paycheck to paycheck if you're smart about it. You'll be mortgage free and living life as a jack-of-all-trades, freewheeling in the countryside with your wife at home, going fishing with the kids. Though it can be hard at times, I do recommend it.

@shagbark_hick My parents bought their current house for $65k back in the late-90’s in rural Pennsylvania but a sub-$50k house is going to be hard to find in 2026 pretty much anywhere.

@callsgnvisigodo @shagbark_hick What small towns with almost no government are controlled by criminals AND also going to be overthrown by a few dozen men? This is like a Chuck Norris movie plot.

@shagbark_hick I think about a couple dozen men and their families could take over one of these Iowa towns that peaked in population in the 1960's and revive it. Get themselves in city government by day, go around letting criminals know that shit ain't gonna fly anymore by night.

@ReubenR80027912 Didn't it start as mainly a thing for people making high incomes and now it's grown into an aspiration for people who really won't be able to afford it? The common thread on a lot of FIRE chat is stuff like quitting being a stock analyst and becoming a shop teacher.

@VK_HM Yeah, but it's not a biopic. That's the point. A biopic is a specific thing. It's not just "movie with real person as subject." And Mozart's life story is very much in the background of the story. Films like this, Selma, Downfall, and Schindler's list are not biopics.

@Beenjam74013737 Eh. I mean yeah it's structurally very different from most music biopics but it also builds itself around Mozart's career. Touches on his early days as a child prodigy, runs through the context for many of his major operas, concludes after he died, etc.

Amadeus is great and textbook you could not make that about any artist of a recent era - when you need their consent or their estate’s for their music, and the plot has an absolutely libellous and essentially untrue portrait of a real contemporary in Salieri. Great film though

I know Lindy West is making us all think about the shortcomings of Millennial feminism, but Gen Z feminism seems to mostly be about having coquette aesthetics and believing sodomy dooms your immortal soul, so we may look back fondly on Lindy in due course.

@gumby4christ @KaelFischer @KnowYrEnemyPod Treating right-wing warmongers like collectible action figures is a lot less endearing when they're sitting in front of one. It's like they can't decide if they want to ask him for an internship or just take a picture with him.

@KaelFischer @KnowYrEnemyPod It can be worthwhile occasionally in a dry intellectual history way. This episode didn't even achieve that. It's just Kristol shrugging off his entire career up to Trump and a pointless debate on Iraq that makes Kristol's old Daily Show appearances look like Lincoln-Douglas.

@studiomurdock It is a career. Most of people who have ever made movies as a career have earned the majority of their living making things for a paycheck, and spun important creative work out of it.

I think a lot of people (Barry included) are missing the point here that, essentially, in Hollywood, you have to make LION KING to sustainably pay your bills. That’s not a career.
The Ankler@TheAnkler

"Whatever the hell you need to do" is how to sustain a career as a director, according to Barry Jenkins. "I worked at Banana Republic for three and a half years while I had a deal at Focus Features and an agent at CAA," the Oscar-winning 'Moonlight' director and co-writer told fellow director Anu Valia ('We Strangers'). @jrm4 @y2jords @Ringler_SSBM In this context, I think kayfabe means "performance schtick." It's only demeaning if you think the act of the performance is demeaning to the performer. And as the trial makes clear, it's anything but.

I feel like the beauty of afroman is that he’s come back to public view 100% maintaining his old kayfabe in what could’ve been presented as something serious. Like there’s not a sense of “actually, Afroman has something serious to talk about” he’s just continuing the bit.

Just Saw a video of a nurse who bought a Car Wash. Paid $300,000 for it, took 100% of profits for a year to pay off the loan. Now makes $4-6k a week from it working 10-15 hours a week & was able to retire from nursing career. Why aren’t more people doing this!?

@curtish5 @UziCryptoo I know the carwash ur talking about. The owner was robbed and threatened with a gun (by an immigrant!) and when he prayed for his life, the cops showed up and arrested him!!! (for being Christian). America has lost its way.

@UziCryptoo Warning. Make sure the car wash in a nice neighborhood. One longtime carwash in Dallas became a evening hangout where nefarious activity occurred. The owner could not get the police to help and they eventually fined HIM for his carwash being a hub of criminal activity.

@han_e_honey @BestMovieMom I'm pretty sure Harvard was "iconic" before a 70s movie that was seen as cheesy at the time and is mostly forgotten by everyone who didn't do freshman orientation at Harvard.

@BestMovieMom The irony is peak: Love Story made Harvard iconic, but also made sure no one else could capture that magic on film. Social Network pulling off 2010 Harvard vibes at Johns Hopkins is actually impressive though!

Harvard University has a strict "no filming" policy because of damage caused by the 1970 film Love Story. To recreate the 2010 setting, The Social Network (2010) used Johns Hopkins University and local prep schools to stand in for the Ivy League campus.

@DSteez510 @iamalmostlegend Schrader wrote the scene, and the actor who was originally going to play the character dropped out last minute so Scorsese filled in. The difference (kinda important) is Scorsese's character is a violent racist who is nudging Travis along. In the text he's a bad guy.

Her take is valid. My introduction to Tarantino was Pulp Fiction and it seemed like he wrote himself in just to repeatedly say the word in this cringe scene. Scorsese did the same thing in Taxi Driver, writing himself in as a character saying it. There was definitely an era of iconic filmmakers writing themselves in as characters in their movies saying the word— their personal motivations can certainly be questioned.

@deux_ex_max @NEETWorldOrder The Nazis began their invasion of the USSR with explicit top-down instructions to liquidate officers, murder civilians by labeling them partisans, with the end goal being mass starvation and genocide. Stalin lobby to respect Geneva, but the Nazis balked at it.

@NEETWorldOrder That’s because the Soviets didn’t follow international law. They were the ones who didn’t sign the Geneva Conventions (Germany did). They asked the Soviets to abide by the Conventions de facto during hostilities but Stalin refused.
