@DustinDemmer I’ve wondered about this. I’ve been overseeding cool season Elymus in my garden for the last several years for this very reason.

Something I hadn't considered--does mixing grasses & sedges in a native flower garden reduce deer or rabbit browsing? Does planting density matter too? It'd make a good research project--plots with flowers alone, plots with flowers+grasses and sedges, ... any takers? :)

@YourNatureBoy @DLNarango Our list includes short native perennials, sedges, and grasses. We recommend small (cell pack) sized plants to limit any damage to tree roots, and not planting within 18” of a tree trunk.

@BeesNativePlant @DLNarango Should there be different lists for Soft Landing plants? I.e. Shallow roots for close to the tree, short plants for formal settings, durable plants that can survive traffic, etc.?

My latest storymap features Soft Landings, a concept developed by Leslie Pilgrim and me. This concept builds upon @DLNarango's research on leps and host plants. Soft Landings are diverse native plantings under the dripline of keystone native trees. Link: arcg.is/1Lvry

Yesterday, cellophane #bee (Colletes inaequalis) females perched at their nest entrances in morning, waiting for temps to warm up. Males patrolling nest aggregation. In afternoon, females visited pussy willow. Nest provisioning iminent after today's rainy weather subsides.

@BeesNativePlant Thank you for the informative article and photos. I've watched the Unequal Cellophane Bees here in Rhode Island for a few weeks. They have the exact criteria you described. The willows started blooming in about the same time frame as well.
