@johnshuttlewrth John! What song did you use for/ inspire you when writing "Berlingo"? It's so familiar and it's driving me crazy!

The Reading Agency
The Reading Agency@readingagency·
77% of people who don’t call themselves readers read every week. Britain doesn’t have a shortage of readers. We have a shortage of people who feel like readers. It’s time to #RedefineReading. 👉 Explore the new State of the Nation report here: bit.ly/46ItklZ

If the leadership of @CILIPinfo @LouisMMCoiffait are finding it difficult to explain to their members just what the crisis in UK public libraries is, I offer them these two charts, which were updated by the DCMS, this morning

@Beforeghosts @CILIPinfo @LouisMMCoiffait Well, firstly, remote use of libraries, is a very small portion of library use and secondly, if people don't use them, then the library has no impact. We know that 90% of the population hardly ever use libraries, now. I don't think it is fair to ignore that (DCMS data, this week)

@coates_tim @CILIPinfo @LouisMMCoiffait They shouldn't be ignored, but they should be taken in conjuction with other reporting, including what statistics cannot measure. Also, do we want to live in a society were access to free, impartial, uncensored information isn't available? Libraries mean more than footfall.

@Beforeghosts @CILIPinfo @LouisMMCoiffait I would suggest that the worst thing to do is to ignore these figures, or deny the importance of them. Because that means we don't address the problems that they rather clearly indicate.

@coates_tim @CILIPinfo @LouisMMCoiffait As useful as they USED to, yes, I can see this POV for society as a whole. There are more pulls on attention and more ways for people to access information outside a library etc. But it doesn't indicate they are not used and valued and needed.

@coates_tim @CILIPinfo @LouisMMCoiffait Reflect how useful people find them? I'd disagree. Many people use remote services from libraries, may rarely step over the threshold but use the services regularly. How do you determine how a person's life has been impacted by the amount of feet have entered a building? You cant

@Beforeghosts @CILIPinfo @LouisMMCoiffait Heather - thanks - people often say that, but I think figures of footfall are actually very important. The reason is that they reflect how useful people find the library to be - constant falls are a clear sign of whether people believe the library really makes an impact

Had to ask a couple to stop talking last night, and they then spent 5 minutes denying they’d been talking. Literally wouldn’t shut up. And then they stormed out!
