When introduced in 2002, the SL55 AMG was described as the most powerful Mercedes-Benz road car up to that point.
Luxury GT, not just sports car.
It combined huge power with the R230’s luxury tech, folding hardtop and long-distance comfort.
That separates it from smaller AMG cars.
Peak 2000s AMG identity
Supercharger whine, huge torque, ABC suspension, SBC brakes that all in a luxury roadster.
This is the AMG era where power and excess mattered more than weight or simplicity.

BMW 7 Series, F01.
Cheap to buy.
Expensive to own.
Local prices now start around €7k-9k for the 730d models.
That sounds unbelievably cheap for quite a modern luxury flagship.
Especially one that still feels this refined today like a 730d and the 740i.
Comfort seats.
Soft-close doors.
Huge motorway presence and the engines are powerful.
The N54 and N63 might be the most risky ones to look at.
The N57 and N55 powered cars are a little bit safer, but not without their issues.
The N52 is the most reliable and least powerful variant out of all of them, but they are rare and weren't sold here in Europe.
When maintained properly, they are excellent long-distance cars and they're not the type of cars that get bought by young joyriders.
This is still a top-level BMW filled with expensive technology.
The depreciation is brutal today and almost 2 decades later it hasn't bottomed out in value.

V8 plus electric motor
It combines the M177 4.0L AMG V8 with electric motors.
System output is around 802 hp and 1,430 Nm.
Rear-axle electric motor layout
The electric motor sits at the rear axle and is integrated with a 2-speed transmission and limited-slip differential.
That is much more complex than a normal mild hybrid setup.
Performance hybrid, not efficiency hybrid
This is not a normal luxury hybrid.
Huge torque number changes the character
1,430 Nm is absurd for an S-Class, but the car is a solid 2595 kg heavy.
It makes the car less about traditional V8 smoothness and more about instant electric-assisted shove.
Different from older S63s and kind of replaces the S65 AMG in a way with so much power.
Older S63 models were big V8 luxury saloons that had no electric assistance of any kind.
