All CS2 updates from Valve have mainly focused on adding more skins.
Meanwhile, they've made the market panic and ruined many people's investments with completely random decisions.

I’m afraid that when millennials get old and can’t work anymore, a lot of us are going to end up homeless. There was just no way to get ahead. We worked just to pay off debt, and for many of us, there was never a real opportunity to save or buy a home because everything was so expensive. I genuinely worry that we’re going to see an entire generation of elderly millennials struggling just to survive, and that’s heartbreaking.

So basically, HL2 here uses planar reflections. This basically means re-capturing the scene a second time to display your reflections.
This option was optional in 2004, and yes, it was performance intensive (d1_canal_09 and 04 were literally the benchmark scenes, iirc).
In 2004, it worked thanks to 3 reasons:
- People's resolutions were low the most common was 1280x800 or 1024x768
- You could turn off those heavy reflections
- The entire level was built with this limitation in mind
Planar reflections give excellent results; however, they scale horribly with resolution and object density.
So does raytracing work better?
It's actually a bit more complex:
First, when you think of raytracing, you usually think of raytracing for lighting, shadows, AND reflections but those are in fact 3 separate things.
Keep this in mind: planar reflections scale badly with mesh density, and they also limit you a lot: for x different planes, you pay the cost x times.
So in this scene, would raytracing win against planar reflections?
Nope. But that's because the planar reflection here is limited to:
- Water
- A single planar surface
- HL2 levels were pretty small, with loading cuts (there are multiple ones in this scene)
- Not a lot of mesh density
If you apply this to a modern real-world scenario, where you want reflections everywhere, with lots of meshes, at high resolution, on multiple planar and curved surfaces, planar reflections simply become impossible.
Not "slightly viable" : impossible.
And that's why devs dropped planar reflections in favor of ray-traced reflections (or ofc SSR).
