🚨NEW: Data just released shows that the number of pupils missing more than half of classes hit an annual record high last year. An unprecedented 176,000 kids were severely absent in 2024/25 - 193% higher than pre-pandemic levels. If we are to save these children from the lifelong consequences of missing school, we must urgently tackle the root causes of the absence crisis. More👇

Realising I have a touch of the Mr Micawber as I am several pages into writing a one page missive. At least I'm not (I think) over exuberant in my expression or lax in paying my debts...

@DanielJLilley There's no other way to describe the moment of pure connection I experienced between my mind, the page, and the intricacies of the updated material deprivation questionnaire in the 2023/24 Family Resource Survey...

@BenNebGregg Never thought I’d read you talking about entering “flow state”

Coming to the annoying realisation that I am my most productive around 17:30. Spend eight hours tediously drafting one half-decent paragraph, then enter a flow state that glues me to my desk writing whole reports far past the time I intended to go home

Me: *crying* You can't just call everything 'the Beveridge report' when it has zero links to his actual work Labour MP: *point at an apple* Beveridge report. *points at a bird* Beveridge report. *points at the sky* also Beveridge. *points into the void* Be-ve-ridge.

Setting aside the report's recommendations, I am, as a researcher in welfare policy, begging Labour politicians to stop calling completely tangential reports 'The Beveridge report for X.' Leave him in peace. Today's welfare state already differs substantially from his vision.

Several cabinet ministers and potential leadership contenders are understood to have looked at the work. Full report to be put into the ether after May local elex 👀 news.sky.com/story/cabinet-…

Turns out that all I needed to rattle through this week's to do list, having faffed four days away, was a seven hour round train trip with spotty wi-fi and nothing better to do. Dread my line manager discovering this is the way to make me efficient!

Newcastle is, I am firmly convinced, one of Britain's most underrated cities. Besides a few modernist aberrations, the centre is remarkably beautiful and the marina delightful. That's before you get to the people, the castle, the history, or the rest of Northumbria!

Pleased to launch @csjthinktank's project, Money Secrets! We'll be exploring how Brits understand their finances and debts, and what role - if any - policy has in helping them manage them better. Sadly was told to remove several extra Dickens references for 'not being relevant'
The Centre for Social Justice@csjthinktank

⚠️People are at their most financially vulnerable this decade, as @lowellfvi shows. Problem debt is trapping people in poverty, with many struggling to talk openly about it. Our project, Money Secrets, will open the lid on how Brits deal with their debts and how we can help💵
