Following months of dedicated UK diplomacy, 46 countries meet today at the Council of Europe to agree critical reforms modernising the way the ECHR deals with migration - supporting the UK to take firm action on border security. It is the work we do internationally which makes us stronger at home.

I could not be more angry about this. The solution to Labour’s challenges do not rest in the hands of one man. This whole charade is so disrespectful to the current crop of Labour MPs who fought hard to win in 2024. Sheer egocentrism which is totally at odds with socialism.

For decades, Westminster has overseen the managed decline of towns like mine. We have talked big, then acted small, stuck in a politics of incrementalism that cannot meet the moment. We have lost the trust of those our party was built to serve. It is my unwavering belief that nothing short of urgent, radical, courageous reform will make a difference. That must start with a change in leadership. Today, I am putting the people I represent and the country I love first and will be resigning as MP for Makerfield. I am standing aside so that Andy Burnham can return to his home, fight to re-enter Parliament, and if elected, drive the change our country is crying out for. This has not been an easy decision. This is my family’s home, where only a few weeks ago, doctors and nurses at Wigan Infirmary saved our newborn son’s life. But we all must make choices and in recent days I found myself with a difficult one: defend the status quo or step forward and act. I have made my choice. I am in politics because politics is how you change lives for the better. My party has one last chance to do that: deliver for the people and places I represent, drive economic growth, secure our borders, reform our state and politics, and change a status quo that is not working. That is the fight. I believe Andy is the one to lead it.

Astonishing that @GlasgowCC has voted to deny the @The_SCOTS Freedom of the City of Glasgow, breaking a tradition that Glasgow has had for generations. Apparently giving organisations Freedom of the City is “inherently problematic” according the Glasgow SNP group.

All this playing fast and loose with the job of Mayor of Manchester is very off putting. The cost of the by-election for the Mayor is estimated to be between 4.5 - 5 million pounds if @AndyBurnhamGM becomes an MP. All for one man? Is that good value for money for the taxpayers?🤷🏼‍♂️

A really exceptional speech Naz gave yesterday. Funny, incredibly moving, highly political, yet with all the tradition of a proposers Loyal Address speech. A very hard combination to pull off - Naz did it with real class 👇
Naz Shah MP@NazShahBfd

It was the honour of my life to move the Loyal Address -the first Muslim to do so. This moment belongs to the people of Bradford West. Their trust and faith in me made it possible. An opportunity of a lifetime. A privilege I owe to Bradford and to Britain. Full speech 🔽

@AndyFitchet Just think of how much higher the growth could have been if the global economic conditions had been anything other than headwinds.

Remember that manifesto pledge to achieve the highest growth in the G7? ✅ Yes growth across the world is weak, yes it’s harmed by the war in Iran, yes it’s harmed by US tariffs. But given all that the UK is growing strongly. A PM leadership contest is the last thing we need.

The Conservative party’s “Alternative King’s Speech” claims unemployment has risen “every month” that Labour have been in government. We’ve fact checked this claim several times over the past year—it isn’t correct. fullfact.org/economy/conser…

Today’s strong growth figures show the Government has the right economic plan. The choices I have made as Chancellor mean our economy is in a stronger position as we deal with the costs of the war in Iran. Now is not the time to put our economic stability at risk.
