After our original episode on SPS (Episode 35) I remember the legend himself, Zuhair Munir, sent us an email about the episode 😍. In this follow-up episode, we talk about how this niche research tool is making its way steadily into mainstream manufacturing.

@taylordsparks Yes, but might not have seen the two machines in all their glory if you were only upstairs 😁 Both are from FCT. The smaller one can do 10-80mm diameter samples. The larger, 250mm samples. Research mainly sintering near-net shapes, recycling metal powders and bonding materials.

@BenThomasTi Was it the equipment in the big high bay facility? If so I think we only looked in from the windows above. Tell me about your FAST tool. We would like to do an episode on that as it's making big waves in the ceramics community in the last few years.

@samwake @BeechesWalkley @Veolia That looks like the top of Walkley Road. Blind corner, cars parked for 100m on on side of a narrow road, terrible to try and drive through at a busy time. I see people mounting the pavement all the time there as the corner is always snarled up. Lots of road rage too 🫤

If @Veolia did not access our streets, then no one would be able to walk without the ever growing rat population biting our ankles.

Generally we let the Sinumeric NC unit do the heavy work of interpolating angles/displacements but we could also feed things in manually if required.

Do you need to manually calculate XYZ displacements that occur due to B or C rotations? Or do you just send XYZ and BC angles (or JK) and the system figures out the rest?

Instead of a 'build plate' we will be printing directly onto pucks made from the same material being extruded. In theory this should sufficiently replace a heated bed(?). 0 bottom solid layers, 3mm thick; their top face is positioned at z=0.
