@herdyshepherd1 It’s the best thing for the showing circuit as well. For it to be relevant going forward show winning animals should be credited for performing on the diets they’ll be on when on farm (low input). Too many show cattle pumped full of concentrates and are an absolute waste of time.

My daughter is at a vital age for learning and wants us to have a go, and if we did happen to do OK it’s a good shop window for our genetics - bull sales Its already forcing us to learn new skills, and though that’s out of our comfort zone, it’s learning and has value

THREAD. A number of people have responded to this tweet that there is nothing wrong with a company a) making a profit and b) that supermarket margins are in any case low. Both of these things are true. But the supermarket sector is unlike any other. A bit of background. 1/

For those currently listening to Simon Roberts, ceo of @sainsburys at the city food and drink lecture, talking about the way the company has protected consumers from inflation, the company made £690 million profit to Apr 2023

Serious question: You’ve got all these folk learning cool stuff or developing ideas - some of which will be great, or useful, and some maybe not… but do you get this stuff out to the rest of us farmers as well as you should?

@herdyshepherd1 Don't worry - all our Scholar presentations from #NuffCon23 will be on our Youtube channel 👍

Right animals for the right place We haven’t fed any concentrates to our ewes for two years - and minimal hay Haven’t fed or jabbed a cow since 2015 - cows are easier to do low inputs with

Which mobile app do you use most on the farm? 1. Fields Area Measure by @FarmisLT - for quick and easy measuring of distances and area. Invaluable. I use it multiple times a day when setting up temporary electric fencing for mob grazing apps.apple.com/gb/app/gps-fie…

@ThrimbyFarms @herdyshepherd1 Second the Bateman squeeze, all our Belties run through it. For weighing use Tru Test S3 weigh head and weigh bars that are attached to a tray that sits in crush. Cheapest way to do it (definitely was).

@herdyshepherd1 We have various but the best one is the bateman squeeze we have. We have a IAE system in which is very good but currently putting a cheap teemore engineering system in that will do a similar job. Spend a wee but more than you should and you’ll be better for it.

Farmer Twitter: what’s the best cattle handling system and weight crush? And why? All help appreciated We haven’t spent any £ on cattle handling facilities since the time of the Falklands War - things may have moved on
