That train had 9 carriages….how many would you have liked it to have had? You can’t “overbook” a train. And bizarrely, YOU didn’t book at all, so what the fuck are you moaning about?
Susie Goss@SusieMGoss

Hi @GWRHelp, what compensation are you offering to passengers who’ve paid £90 to travel on the massively over-booked, standing room only 19:04 train from Paddington to Plymouth? How can you force people to stand for hours when tickets cost so much? Disgusting!

@richiemcilroy Train operators often forget that their USP over e.g. driving or flying is that passengers can work while they travel using onboard power and connectivity. When I commute to work, I often choose a _slower_ train because I'm more likely to get a seat that's good for working.

trains in the UK are so broken. I’m on a Avanti West Coast train to London Euston. plug sockets aren’t working (my laptop is dead). WiFi isn’t working. No mobile signal. just sat looking out of the window.

@ArnoldLabour @davidjcayley @rich_rdctd @DanNeidle If you've never earned more than £9,000 per year then I'm a little surprised that all your stocks and shares aren't in an ISA wrapper and therefore gains are tax free? You can add £20,000 to ISAs every year, and the gains for all assets within ISA wrappers are tax free.

@davidjcayley @rich_rdctd @BenjaminEHowe @DanNeidle You think if you can save a thousand pounds to buy a used car or a thousand pounds worth of shares, you're rich? I've never been able to earn more than £9K/year. I've had to save money during periods where the sun shined to be able to survive. The poor aren't a stereotype.

"Streeting said that the rates should mirror income tax bands - so 40% for higher rate taxpayers and 45% for additional rate taxpayers" Assume you earn £100 pre-tax: Pay 40% income tax → £60 left to invest. The £60 doubles (100% growth) → £120. Capital gain = £60. Pay 40% CGT on the gain → £24 tax. Final amount: £96. lol, lmao even. That's about 7.5 years of average S&P500 CAGR just to get back to your pre-taxed baseline. The work has already been penalised at 40%, now you want people who invest for their future to take an even greater haircut further down the line.
Steven Swinford@Steven_Swinford

Wes Streeting has this morning set out his tax plans - specifically bringing capital gains tax into line with income tax He says that the current system is unfair because it penalises work Higher or additional rate taxpayers will pay 24% on gains in the current financial year. Streeting said that the rates should mirror income tax bands - so 40% for higher rate taxpayers and 45% for additional rate taxpayers He says that the approach could raise £12billion a year Streeting said: “A member of my family is a cleaner in Lancashire. She pays a higher tax rate on her salary than her landlord pays for the growing value of the home she lives in. She slogs her guts out, he puts in far less effort, yet the state rewards him more than her. And we wonder why people are angry. “The system is penalising work. It’s not fair and it’s bad for our economy. We need a wealth tax that works. A pound made from simply owning assets should not be taxed less than a pound made from a hard day's work. We can do it in a way that is pro-growth, pro-entrepreneur and pro-work.”

@stevokps @rsole1212 @SusieMGoss @GWRHelp So basically what you're saying is that Susie shouldn't have been given an option to travel on that train because all the seats had been reserved? Sounds like a worse system than what we have, but...

@TomTugendhat One minor problem with your observation... Track repairs have been nationalised since Network Rail was established 23 years ago. This was because the private track operator, Railtrack, collapsed into administration in 2001.

We will see strikes increase and investment fall. How do I know? Because that’s what always happens. Government employees strike because they know ministers will back down because they don’t treat your money like their own. And investment will fall because in a choice between putting off track repairs and delaying a pay rise for nurses or a new school - guess who will get priority? Nationalisation will cost us all but mostly those who depend on the trains. This is ideology over delivery.
Anneliese Dodds@AnnelieseDodds

In case you missed it: the Labour Government is getting on with bringing rail into public control - including GWR 🚄 This rail operator will be coming under public control on 13 December, and there are more to come!

@tweetclix @ArnoldLabour @DanNeidle @rich_rdctd But to riff off that – yes, I think all capital should be indexed and then if you sell for less than the indexed value then that's a loss that can be carried forward.

@tweetclix @ArnoldLabour @DanNeidle @rich_rdctd Unclear – remember this is a proposal from a backbench MP, and really Streeting is saying "If I were to be part of a formal Labour leadership race, here's a policy that I would promote that might end up becoming law". Too many "ifs" at this stage IMO, it's just conceptual.

@DanNeidle @rich_rdctd Indexation allowance isn't going to help if you have nine tech shares go to zero, and another one go 10x. UK media/westminster bubble types are so out of date, they're living in the 1990s.

Also, for what it's worth, I was a Starlink customer... for a year. Then the utility company connected fiber cable. I then canceled Starlink because fiber >> Starlink. I don't see when I would use Starlink ever again (though it works amazingly well when you have no connectivity but a view to the sky), save if I went somewhere truly rural, but this is just me

@GergelyOrosz Railway’s post mortem suggested multiple GCP customers were affected, have we seen any evidence of this?

This wild. Two years ago, Google deleted a large customer’s account: Unisuper, an Australian retirement savings fund. It seems they now blocked an even larger customer, cloud provider Railway. This kind of story you never hear with AWS, Azure, or even Oracle. GCP 👎
Railway@Railway

Google Cloud has blocked our account, making some Railway services unavailable. We have escalated this directly with Google. The Railway Platform team has since confirmed access to Google Cloud and is working on restoring access to all workloads. We have access to some of our Google Cloud–hosted infrastructure and are working to restore the rest of the service. We apologize for the disruption.

Always disheartening to see a company abandon its community efforts, especially one you've advocated for and supported for a long time. Not the first time I've seen this happen, won't be the last, but it always hurts, and it never goes well for the company in the long run.

@crepycidon @Public_Eye_XVA @GWRHelp It seems like TOCs have a habit of fibbing in order to avoid paying out Delay Repay – I semi-regularly have to call my local operator out. Perhaps they need some sort of "penalty compensation" for when they edit a claim to reduce the value and they get it wrong?

Heading into town for a reunion dinner in the City this evening. My thanks to @GWRHelp station staff at Bath who held gate open👍 Quite a number of fraudsters @Heidi_Labour with invalid tickets on PAD train incl "friend bought ticket using his railcard"🤦‍♂️GWR staff firm & fair👏

@nuculabs @the_smart_ape @bee_fumo Not really – registrars generally have very little power. True, the domain _registry_ (e.g. Nominet for .uk) is a point of failure, but they generally run their businesses pretty seriously because, y'know, domains are an important cornerstone of the internet.

Wow, I didn't know that Microsoft supported an auditable encryption app called Truecrypt for encrypting the system drive. They dropped support and migrated to Bitlocker, the closed source official system encryption service that recently had a backdoor discovered, in 2014. 🤔🤔🤔
