To be clear, "restoring the local ecosystem" would involve letting the lake dry up completely since the underlying basin was inundated by an irrigation mishap that redirected the Colorado River's entire flow away from the ocean for 2 years at the turn of the 20th century.

@SwinkMcCloud @Lucid_Stew @BernieSanders Well there has been a great loss of state capacity and institutional knowledge since the 1980s as so much formerly inhouse work has has been outsourced to the private sector, resulting in troubled ship programs for the Navy and troubled rail programs for states.

@SwinkMcCloud @Lucid_Stew @BernieSanders I will note that the modern "Big US Navy" came at the same time as the modern income tax -- not a coincidence I think -- dreadnoughts cost a lot of money. To cut taxes the Harding Administration pushed through the Washington Naval Treaty limiting battleship construction.

@Lucid_Stew @BernieSanders Does sound like taxes need to go up or get paid by billionaires and multinational corporations. But like an overgrown garden, the federal goverment needs weeding too, poorly performing programs and departments reformed, replaced, or ended. And we have an automatic "war tax" too.

@GarethDennis Note the recovery after 1982. That was chopped off by the 1990 recession. Then recovered under privatisation, But the sectorised business-led BR would have done the same. And under privatisation subsidy per passenger mile and as a % of GDP both doubled,

@AC_NavalHistory OK, I've read up and see they have some sorta of plan to assemble in same Newport News drydock in which they build super carriers. Despite reports of CVN delays they think they can fit a battleship into the drydock time. I think more capacity needed, might as well be at Philly.

@GarethDennis Yes, VIA Rail has done a good job. This is the new Northlander Train, with VIA trainsets in the background. The Northlander livery is based on the historic livery (on a DB TEE) of the service to the far north of Ontario. I would prefer just a vertical blue strip for the coaches.

@GarethDennis Here @GarethDennis is the VIA Rail livery for their Siemens Charger-Venture trainsets, of which the Airos are a variant. The locomotive and cab car have strong angles, but the coaches are all strong horizonal bands.
