@AndyHVandenBerg 99% pay to play. The legit ones I've seen are advisors who are on call for real press commentary or just having your own column writing real articles.

Dumb question: how are so many advisors featured in Fortune, Barrons, Business Insider, etc? Is this a pay to play situation or is it just about working with the right PR firm?

I just came across this comment on Instagram that says $5 million is not enough. What do you think?

Video production might be one of the best skills to have, period. Creating high-quality, cinematic footage with real storytelling takes either serious skill or a massive budget. Solo creators who have it can parlay that into almost anything and build real businesses around it. It’s why you see former Vice journalists like Cleo Abrams, or guys like Mark Rober just totally crush it

Most underrated kids’ show ever: Bernard’s Watch. A 90s British show about a boy who finds a watch that can stop time. Slow-paced, calm, positive lessons. Watch it with your kids and thank me later. Full episodes are free on YouTube.

Heard of someone keeping $1/day on terrible-performing ads just so competitors copying from their Ads Library end up cloning negative ROI campaigns. Diabolical.

@big_duca Ive been married for years. Finally did the wedding last year. Doing it at a venue in La would have been that or more. So I booked an entire hotel in Mexico for 3 days and paid for the whole thing for the guests. Basically the same price, except they got a vacation

@theisaacmed Love Joao Pessoa there! Yeah, the hack is to pay family or local friend a flat daily fee, car seats installed at the airport, and we are good to go the whole trip.

I don’t usually tell people that I’m Brazilian. I left when I was 9 years old. Grew up in the USA. I feel more American than Brazilian. In fact, I don’t even really remember how living in Brazil is. I’m here visiting family for the first time in a decade. Rio may very well be one of, if not the most beautiful city large city I’ve ever been to. I’ve traveled a lot. Been to Spain. Japan. All over the USA, etc. No city is as intertwined with nature as Rio. Sheer mountains surround the city, with greenery literally everywhere. And I know what some of you will say. ‘But Isaac, it’s so dangerous’ I saw a Korean lady’s purse get stolen in front of my eyes in Rome. My fiancées promise ring got stolen out of our hotel room that same trip. I was almost attacked by some homeless dude in Hollywood Los Angeles. My dog scared him off. What I’m saying is that if you have some street smarts, it’s fine. Worth the visit. Worth checking out. Brazil isn’t as highly touristed as other countries but it’s certainly worth it. Anyway, I’m in Rio, then São Paulo and Joao Pessoa. Looking for local builders to connect with.

The Kentucky Derby is 152 years old and the longest continuously held sporting event in US history. Some interesting facts: 1. The founder killed himself. Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr., grandson of William Clark from the OG Lewis & Clark Expedition, built Churchill Downs and invented the Derby in 1875. Lost everything in the 1893 stock market crash. Shot himself with a pistol in 1899 because he was scared of being poor. 2. The first Derby was won by a Black jockey on a horse trained by a former slave. 13 of the 15 jockeys in the inaugural race were Black. Oliver Lewis won on a horse named Aristides. His trainer Ansel Williamson was born into slavery. 3. People bet over $300 million on a 2-minute race last year. Total handle across Derby day in 2025: $349M. For a race that lasts about as long as a TikTok. 4. The most expensive drink at the track is a $5,000 mint julep. Standard one is $22, or you can upgrade to the 24-karat gold-plated silver cup version for 5 grand. They pour 120,000 juleps over 2 days. To anyone at the Derby this year, I hope you win big. Pretty cool event.

In 2019 my girlfriend (now wife) sent Patrick Collison a cold email for the ages. Patrick replied 3 minutes later, warmly, with a yes. A few weeks later I met Patrick at Nopa at 9pm. He ordered tea, I ordered something stronger. He was congenial and energetic, and 90 minutes flew by. The whole episode was special. My wife sending that email was a remarkable gift. Ditto Patrick's generosity. They say never meet your heroes but I think the better advice is to choose the right ones.

We need a "Day in the Life of Patrick Collison." Most people in his position would be drowning 24/7 in emails and Slack messages, prepping to meet with everyone from direct reports to investors to board members, tied up with strategic decisions like "does Stripe buy company X or not," screening daily invitations to public appearances, deciding who to recruit for top positions, and much more. And yet he's doing this--how? Is he amazing at delegation? Does he have an AI-system to help him process incoming emails/texts/calls? How does he prioritize what to focus on? Does he never sleep? What is his secret??

@AndyHVandenBerg Agreed! The caveat I’ve seen to the “rent better than buy” is it only applies to big cities with established rental markets. Small town rentals you end up with an emotionally attached landlord who’ll take everything personal 😆
