As with Pope Francis, Pope Leo seems intent on challenging my belief in Papal infallibility. First, on "pro-life but pro-death penalty," while I am opposed to the death penalty, the Church's position on the death penalty has evolved over the centuries. The position that the death penalty is "inadmissible" is recent (formalized by Pope Francis in a 2018 revision of the Catechism of the Catholic Church). For example, St. Thomas Aquinas explicitly provided for the death penalty in certain circumstances. Second, the more expansive look one takes of Durbin's record the more at odds one finds Durbin with Catholic social thought. Gender ideology? Marriage redefinition (which Pope Francis termed an "anthropological regression")? Third, who are the Catholics advocating for the "inhumane" treatment of immigrants? This is a weak straw man claim. Support for enforcement of immigration law is not synonymous with the inhumane treatment of anyone. In fact, the evidence suggests open borders imperil migrants and Americans alike. Furthermore, is Pope Leo suggesting "render unto Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's" is no longer operative? Pope Leo's contentions here are disappointing both theologically and intellectually.
