I love this timeless article from Steven C. Reinhart about teacher moves in the math classroom that help get kids doing more of the communicating (instead of the teacher). One of my absolute favorites: hybridalgebra.pbworks.com/f/Never+Say+An…

At around this time, 2 years ago, we held our beloved Mom's hands as she left us. She was one in a gazillion. She will never be forgotten. Understated, mild-mannered, gentle, and loving, yet a strong woman who was the central pillar of our home.

Can you believe it? I am now a math instructor at The University of Saskatchewan! Go Huskies! I didn't get a job here or anything. I'm just a math instructor physically on their campus.

“I simply didn’t want the book to end given the sheer delight of the story-telling. Pheasants Nest is a stunning debut.” I grew up reading book reviews in @theage, so seeing this amazing first newspaper review of my novel tonight makes me weep with joy.❤️ theage.com.au/culture/books/…

Dark Emu is trending. This book provides well documented insights into complex Aboriginal cultures. Bruce Pascoe’s new book also looks great. Retweet to upset RWNJ trolls.

@MrDixonMath @cpwaikiki @RyanMath6284 Btw I have never really considered how Number Talks are discovery learning... Although I suppose we are, as a group, we are discovering... I'd consider it more an explicit teaching & learning experience where explicit T & L is collaborative - most from students, led by teacher

I’m convinced that these are the reasons people don’t like number talks: A. Untrained in the practice B. Don’t value student thinking or different cultural insights C. Don’t like Jo Boaler D. Think it’s discovery learning #mtcoz #mtbos #iteachmath

@surfmaths @kath_cartwright I think your idea of linking warm up and main task is very good. As you suggest, it can model helpful strategies for students to use in their own investigations.

@kath_cartwright My experience as a teacher is if I regularly connect the prelim and main tasks, then students are anticipating/ looking for these connections... I am interested in others thoughts about this though, as it is clearly an important consideration.

Awesome read! I love the idea that preliminary tasks “give Sts access to more tools to apply…” I found some Sts don’t realize the pre-task is related to the problem and therefore don’t make the connection - I’m wondering @surfmaths how can we help them do this without ‘telling’?
James Russo@surfmaths

One of the biggest shifts in my practice over the past few years when teaching maths through structured inquiry is the consideration given to the preliminary task. We discuss some of our ideas here: @tobyrusso @kath_cartwright @10001angela @helenjwc researchgate.net/publication/37…
