In 2008, 62% of teachers said they were very satisfied with their job. In 2022, that dropped to 12%. We've got a serious problem brewing in education...

We discount just how much the students who ARE behaving and just want to learn HATE disruptive, disrespectful students Don't they deserve an education, too?

Hear me out: If a student calls their teacher a "f---ing b-tch," they don't need a hug, a bag of Takis, and some time to cool down in a bean bag chair They need to get marched out of the school

@adam_voigt Should be scrapped altogether. Nothing more than a school ranking system imo. ACARA needs to come up with something that doesn’t function like it was made in the 90s. Today was a disappointment.

A wonderful, serendipitous opportunity for parents & teachers to affirm for kids that NAPLAN is crazy low-stakes for them, that it’s not a race or an entrance exam. Go for a walk, chill, get a good night’s sleep and just sit the test when the computers are up and working again.
ACARA@ACARAeduau

NAPLAN testing has now resumed. We apologise for the disruption to students and schools, and  thank them for their patience. We continue to monitor the platform to ensure students are able to complete their assessments without further issues.

@AEUfederal Yep. NAPLAN is purely a ranking system. Provides minimal for schools and the platform operates like it’s straight out of the 90s. Leave it to the schools or build something better.

Today’s failure of the online NAPLAN testing platform highlights that the system is riddled with problems and should be scrapped in favour of sample-based testing and teacher-led assessments. Read more: bit.ly/4ljGI70

@BradRowswell Brad Rowswell MP as a Numeracy Learning Specialist I’m deeply disappointed. I work at a school with a low SES and the upheaval it caused us wasn’t great. Schools deserve better when millions of dollars are shelled out to ACARA and VCAA. Get the portal right, they had one job.

STATEMENT: NAPLAN SYSTEM FAILURE Both kids and teachers have enough going on and deserve better than a NAPLAN system that has failed. Parents deserve better than a Federal Education Minister who’s in hiding and not providing leadership when it matters. Legitimate question must be asked about the reliability of this NAPLAN data set, given the stuff up. On the back of cyber breaches in Victorian Government schools, parents and students deserve a full and frank explanation; including what went wrong and why. #springst

@RogersHistory We have, and most of the time they do pay purely because they are embarrassed. We had one child break a window once and the parent paid. Hard to enforce but the reasonable parents come to the table. It’s really a case by case thing.

I am a high school chemistry teacher. For years, I encountered students who did not know their multiplication tables and it interfered with their ability to understand chemistry. This year, I decided to take matters into my own hands. ⬇️

@jliemandt As a Numeracy Learning Specialist I became annoyed that we had students leaving our school not knowing their facts up to 12x12. I developed a strategy sequence we're now using across our school. Knowing your facts is important imo.

Most schools stopped teaching kids to memorize multiplication tables. They called it “old fashioned.” 🙄 It’s actually one of the most damaging things they did to math education. Without automatic recall, kids hit a wall in fractions, algebra, and everything after. At Alpha School, we’re fixing it - and kids are loving it. 🚀👾

My daughter used to hate FastMath and would do it last, and often not at all. Today, with the changes, she chatted excitedly on the way to school about how she was going to do FastMath first and something about blasts and ghosties. Thank you all for continuing to improve my child’s education—it’s working!

To make this a norm: - Give teachers curriculum that expects fact fluency in early grades, and includes ample volumes of practice - Introduce screeners to make sure we aren’t passing kids into upper grades without knowing times tables - Cut the fluff from elementary math curricula
