While much of the debate about the war with Iran has focused on its geopolitical and geoeconomic consequences, far less attention has been paid to the humanitarian toll.

This is remarkable for many reasons, not least of which is that the administration has been sending deportation flights to Iran in recent months and attempting to repatriate people there as recently as late February.

As always smart takes from @RZimmt. But for Iran near-term the most relevant fallout from the US operation in Venezuela may be competition for public, media & policymaker attention in DC & beyond. Less int'l focus on Iran protests may enable an even more brutal regime crackdown.
Raz Zimmt@RZimmt

Possible Lessons Iran May Draw from Venezuela (without delving into the significant differences between the two cases): From the regime’s perspective: A. The Trump administration is willing to use military force to achieve its objectives. B. The assessment is likely to be reinforced that the ultimate U.S. goal is political change, rather than merely action against Iran’s nuclear or missile programs; consequently, there is little incentive to negotiate with the Trump administration. C. Iran should strengthen its deterrence vis-à-vis the United States by continuing to enhance its strategic capabilities (possibly also changing its nucleae doctrine?) in order to bolster regime resilience. From the public’s perspective: A. The Trump administration may follow through on its threats to use force in response to violent repression of protests, and it may therefore be possible to rely on it more than previously assumed. B. On the other hand, a change of government in Caracas does not necessarily constitute regime change. If another authoritarian military government were to replace Maduro, this would reinforce the assessment that, in Iran as well, an authoritarian regime led by the IRGC could replace Khamenei, potentially accompanied by instability and chaos (depending on developments in Venezuela).

Conditions in Gaza are beyond disastrous, beyond catastrophic, beyond horrendous, beyond words. May the pain & fear in the eyes of forcibly starved & displaced children & families who have barely survived the genocide haunt all those who are actively committing these atrocities as well as those who are enabling them through silence or actual support. This will not be forgotten.

There is enough food to feed all of Gaza’s population for months stockpiled in warehouses just miles from where people are being starved. The sadism of this policy - and the complicity of Europe, the US and neighboring countries - is a moral depravity.
UNRWA@UNRWA

UNRWA has enough food for the entire population of #Gaza for over three months stockpiled in warehouses–including this one in Al Arish, Egypt–awaiting entry. The supplies are available. The systems are in place. Open the gates, lift the siege, allow UNRWA to do its work and help people in need among them 1 million children.

Five things to remember about war: 1. Many things reported with confidence in the first hours and days will turn out not to be true 2. Whatever they say, the people who start wars are often thinking chiefly about domestic politics 3. The rationale given for a war will change over time, such that actual success or failure in achieving a named objective is less relevant than one might think 4. Wars are unpredictable 5. Wars are easy to start and hard to stop

Zelensky is a wartime leader watching his people suffer and die under Russian attacks every day. To be lectured and lied to by Trump and Vance, as they defend the war criminal dictator committing these atrocities, is unimaginable agony. An everlasting shame for America.
Alex Vindman 🇺🇸@AVindman

There has never been anything like this. Trump and Vance look like children talking about accommodating Putin. Zelensky holds his ground and defends his nation… and the free world.

UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese was set to brief Congress today on her latest findings from Gaza. But in a last-minute twist, pressure from “higher-ups” led to the cancellation. The halls of Congress should echo with voices of truth and accountability, not fear and censorship. Israel’s actions in Gaza deserve scrutiny under international law, and it’s unacceptable that those exposing these realities are silenced. Our gratitude goes out to the Congressional staffers who were ready to hear from the UN Special Rapporteur about Gaza.

J.D. Vance routinely lies about immigration. The figure he cites for the number of undocumented immigrants is twice that given by even the most anti-immigration think tank. And the vast majority of those arrested for fentanyl smuggling are US citizens. #VPDebate2024

Over the course of my grandfather's lifetime, he gifted and "loaned" Donald $413 million. And Donald still declared bankruptcy 6 times. He failed so badly that the banks needed to put him on a $425,000-a-month allowance.

Devastating dam collapse following heavy rainfall on Sunday in East #Sudan wiped out at least 20’villages. This on top of ongoing impacts of conflict, floods, cholera, famine, displacement across the country app.powerbi.com

Surging waters have burst through a dam, wiped out at least 20 villages and left at least 30 people dead but probably many more in eastern Sudan, the United Nations said, devastating a region already reeling from months of civil war reut.rs/3Z1XrCS

Whatever the agreement to not push back or fact-check in real time-- this is disturbing to me. This is how democracy and norms get eroded. Fact-checking and preparedness are part of the safeguards to keep people in power accountable. This nation is in trouble.

I think that — at least as interpreted by both UNHCR and CJEU — there is little question that the conditions set by article 1D have now been met. Which entitles Palestinians to ipso facto protection in any state party.
Alison Phipps አሊሰን 🧡🕊️@alison_phipps

Inside this very clear letter stating that UNRWA is barely operating is also the now very real possibility that as well as Art. 99 of UN Charter, Art 1d) of Refugee Covention may have to be invoked. UNWRA may cease in its ability to deliver assistance to the Palestinians in Gaza
