The world's only taxidermied blue whale, dating back to 1865 CE, is housed at the Natural History Museum in Sweden. However, due to an incident involving a couple having “relations” inside it, the whale's jaws are now only opened on special occasions. This extraordinary specimen, known simply as “The Whale,” has been one of the most unusual and beloved museum displays in Sweden for more than a century. Completed in 1865, it represents a rare moment in natural history: an attempt to taxidermy the largest creature ever known to live on Earth. Because a full blue whale cannot be mounted in the traditional way, the museum constructed a massive interior framework and carefully stretched the whale’s preserved skin over it, creating a life-sized, walk-inside exhibit that became an instant curiosity for the public. For generations, schoolchildren and tourists were allowed to step through the giant jaws and wander inside the hollow interior, where early museum guides even held small lectures about ocean life. By the late twentieth century, however, the exhibit gained notoriety after an incident in which a couple was caught engaging in sexual activity inside the whale’s mouth. The event prompted the museum to restrict access, and the jaws are now opened only on select days, usually tied to educational events or historical anniversaries. Despite the restrictions, the whale remains a striking piece of scientific heritage and a testament to nineteenth-century ambition in preservation. The whale originally washed ashore near Gothenburg in 1865, and transporting its massive body inland required more than 30 horse-drawn wagons working over multiple days. #archaeohistories

In 1984, a cult carried out the largest biological attack in U.S. history by spreading salmonella on food and doorknobs in an Oregon town. Their goal was to make people too sick to vote so they could win a local election and take control... In the fall of 1984, the quiet town of The Dalles, Oregon, became the center of a bizarre and terrifying bioterrorism plot. Members of the Rajneeshee cult, followers of Indian guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, intentionally contaminated local salad bars, produce, and door handles with salmonella bacteria. The group hoped to incapacitate enough residents to sway a Wasco County election in their favor, allowing them to seize political control and expand their commune’s influence. More than 750 people fell ill, though miraculously no one died. At first, investigators suspected a natural outbreak. It wasn’t until a year later, when internal conflicts within the cult led to whistleblowing, that the truth emerged. The attack was masterminded by Rajneesh’s powerful aide, Ma Anand Sheela, who later fled the country but was extradited and sentenced to prison. The incident remains the largest bioterror attack on American soil and exposed shocking vulnerabilities in public health and food safety. It also revealed the cult’s growing radicalism, rooted in a vision of utopia that devolved into paranoia, manipulation, and criminal behavior. The Rajneeshee commune, known as Rajneeshpuram, housed over 2,000 followers and even operated its own police force and airport. The 2018 Netflix documentary Wild Wild Country later reignited global fascination with the cult’s rise and downfall. © Reddit #archaeohistories

The massive 6-foot-long skull belonged to a newly identified species of pliosaur, a ferocious marine reptile that dominated the seas around Britain during the Jurassic period, 150 million years ago. Often described as the “ocean T-Rex,” this apex predator had immense power, with strong jaws and razor-sharp teeth capable of crushing prey. Its discovery marks one of the most complete and largest marine reptile skulls ever found, providing rare insight into the terrifying rulers of ancient seas. The fossil’s story began in April 2022 when fossil hunter Phil Jacobs noticed a strange rock while walking along the beach at Kimmeridge, Dorset. Upon closer inspection, he realized it was the fossilized snout of a pliosaur, teeth intact. Unable to carry the heavy find, he buried it and alerted his colleague Steve Etches at the Etches Collection Museum. Together, they retrieved the fossil using a ladder as a makeshift stretcher, confirming that it had fallen from the eroding cliffs above. The remarkable excavation has been featured in a documentary by Sir David Attenborough, who hailed the pliosaur as “one of the greatest predators the world has ever seen.” This discovery not only sheds light on prehistoric marine ecosystems but also highlights the importance of vigilance and collaboration in unearthing ancient treasures hidden in plain sight. © Reddit #archaeohistories

A German family has lived in the same place for 3,000 years Scientists have discovered that the Huchthausen family from the village of Förste (Lower Saxony) has lived there continuously for around three millennia, Bild reports. DNA analysis showed that the ancestors of Manfred Huchthausen lived just two kilometers away — in the Lichtenstein Cave, where archaeologists found human remains buried around 1000 BC, along with bronze jewelry, animal bones, and traces of funeral pyres. Researchers believe these ancient inhabitants of the Harz region traded salt — the “white gold” of the Bronze Age. The local museum director noted that they looked almost identical to their modern descendants. “I always thought our family had been here a long time — but three thousand years?” Huchthausen laughed.
