Jill is 100% correct. we should absolutely evaluate, test and check-on home-school kids. if they are not performing at least as well as the worst kid in a public school then they should face the same consequences as a public school with similar performance.
so, to take an example, 23 schools in Baltimore have zero children scoring proficient in math. Because of that, those schools have faced the consequence of getting extra funding.
thus, if a homeschooler is found to have performance that bad or worse, they should also be given extra funding, I guess.

Jill Filipovic@JillFilipovic
Right, if homeschooling is actually super high quality, then homeschooling families should not object to being evaluated, tested, and checked-in-on to make sure their kids are actually learning.

@money_cruncher It's not betting, it's "investing". We are talking about Korean micro cap stocks on IBKR, right?
English

Stop betting. It's terrible for your taxes and wallet:
1. Say you win $1k and lose $1k, net $0. You have to itemize to deduct the loss, and since most people take the standard, you'll pay taxes on $1k. New law also limits losses to 90%.
2. Some states don't allow you to deduct losses at all (e.g NC)
3. Winnings increase your AGl, which could reduce other tax credits

@untalentedroto2 @Lifeinvestmoney You've clearly never met an "educator" with a Master's or PhD.
English

@BiggestRonald @Lifeinvestmoney Also he said without having skills. So getting a master and a phd definitely counts as skills

@BiggestRonald @Lifeinvestmoney There are one year PhD programs?

How the 5% California wealth tax is a 67% wealth tax for Sergey Brin:
>Owns 3% of GOOG.
>Holds 25.3% of voting rights
>Wealth tax is assessed as the greater of his ownership or voting rights. So his tax is 5% * his 25.3% voting ownership = 1.27% of the value of GOOG.
>1.27% taxes / 3% ownership looks like a 42.2% wealth tax, but that's not quite right.
>He has to pay the wealth tax with after-tax cash proceeds. So he needs to sell enough stock to cover 37.1% in taxes first (23.8% federal and 13.3% state).
>His gross stock sale has to be 2.01% of GOOG to cover the wealth tax + federal and state taxes.
>His wealth tax bill is thus 67% of his net worth (2.01%/3%)
>This for 2026. There are proposals being drafted for a 2028 wealth tax.
(I understand that some people see this as a feature)

@MercuriusFilius Zero. That's not earned income, that's capital gains. Different tax treatment. Also, if the cow is held for more than 12 months you can depreciate it and qualify for LT cap gains.

With fewer students, but more resources applied to them, Michigan made the following progress with respect to its black students:
Math proficiency results 18 years ago: 5-10%
2025: 5-10%
Matt Maddock@matthewmaddock
Over the last 18 years, Michigan public schools lost 340,000 students but gained 34,000 employees.

🚨 Here is the full 42 minutes of my crew and I exposing Minnesota fraud, this might be my most important work yet. We uncovered over $110,000,000 in ONE day. Like it and share it around like wildfire! Its time to hold these corrupt politicians and fraudsters accountable
We ALL work way too hard and pay too much in taxes for this to be happening, the fraud must be stopped.

it's much worse than this is you look at "taxes paid net of benefits received."
@Mark_J_Perry did some great work on this a ways back
the bottom ~75% of americans are net recipients of federal money and basically only the top 20% pay anything meaningful.
people think they pay taxes because they only consider their gross taxes paid and ignore the cash they get back.
something like 70% of the US federal budget now functions as wealth redistribution of one sort of another (SS, medicare, welfare, SNAP, unemployment, etc) it's the primary function of the federal government.

Michael A. Arouet@MichaelAArouet
Left populists in the US and elsewhere love screaming "tax the rich." In reality, the top 10% of US earners already pay 59% of income taxes, while the bottom 50% pay only 3%. Are the left ignorant, naive or manipulative? Or is it just pure envy?
