@JMGreerWriter That would be wrong because "superluminal" travel is indeed plausible and observations in space of black holes are proof of it.

There are quite a few scholarly fields these days that have basically been shut down because there’s no more original work to be done. The closing of physics has got to be particularly upsetting to true believers in Tomorrowland, too, because that means most of their wet dreams — superluminal space travel, notably — have just had the door shut on them forever.

@entangledQbit @martinmbauer This is a nice visualisation of the plus polarization of linearized GWs, theory is sound and mostly what GW detectors can see (although doesn't hold in the strong GW limit where you get self interactions)

How gravitational waves distort space: What you see is a quadrupole wave. Conservation of energy–momentum rules out grav monopole and dipole radiation. In other words, gravity is mediated by a spin-2 tensor field (in contrast to a spin-1 field in the case of electromagnetism)

Me, @DucXPham, and @whitesheepie "created" 2v2 as you know it today by hosting the first 2v2 tournament ever called "Friendly Fire." Instead of the 2v2 game mode that was a sig spam fest because of no team damage, we had to play on free for all with matching team colors.

@digital_sins @grok This is useful for learning more about the early universe. If we discover evidence of primordial gravitational waves due to magnetic fields, it can help us learn about the inflationary mechanisms driving the Big Bang 😄

We calculate the gravitational wave spectrum that would be emitted by these primordial magnetic fields for models of inflation beyond slow-roll and we find that experiments in the near future may be able to detect them!

Ahahahaha, the James Webb Space Telescope continues to deliver massive L’s for astrophysics. A new paper shows that the “Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation” can be explained entirely by the energy of recently discovered Early Mature Galaxies — massive galaxies that the JWST discovered which crushed the existing models of galaxy formation because they formed much earlier than astrophysicists thought possible. But now these EMGs turn out to account for the entire energy density of the CMB radiation, which was believed to be a “snapshot” of the first light emitted after the Big Bang, when the universe was ~379,000 years old. The variations in the CMB were believed to be relics of quantum fluctuations in the dense plasma of the Big Bang. If these new findings are accepted (and there’s no reason not to accept them), then all of the following flagship findings of cosmology are thrown into question: — Big Bang theory: foundational cosmological model undermined — Cosmic inflation: loses observational justification — ΛCDM model: key parameters become unreliable — CMB power spectrum: loses predictive relevance — Dark energy: inferred from CMB; may be mischaracterized — Dark matter density: current estimates may be invalid — Age of the universe: must be recalculated — Primordial nucleosynthesis: needs alternative explanation — Hubble constant (H₀): no longer reliably constrained by CMB — Large-scale structure formation: initial conditions unclear — Reionization epoch: timing and cause questioned — Cosmic distance ladder: calibration may be flawed — ISW (Integrated Sachs–Wolfe) effect: interpretation invalidated — Acoustic peaks in CMB: no longer evidence of primordial sound waves — Polarization of the CMB: origin needs reassessment — Baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO): decoupled from CMB — Cosmic curvature: flatness inference challenged — Matter–radiation equality timing: re-evaluated — Gravitational lensing of CMB: loses standard interpretation — Planck and WMAP findings: foundational assumptions invalidated My friends, do not listen to scientists when they act like they have everything figured out and you’re a retard for questioning them. They have abandoned the humility needed for scientific discovery long ago, and it’s only when new findings arrive with shock and awe that their hubris is exposed.

@realism_fan The actual magnitude of the contamination is also small, so to ignore the precision of lcdm is to very much throw the baby out with the bathwater. I think it's enough to say we should be careful performing parameter estimation with current datasets (which has always been true).

@realism_fan Sorry, this is still the wrong interpetation of this. It is mostly agreed upon that lcdm will eventually fail, it's just a matter of how. This paper suggests the parameter space as seen by observation is contaminated, and makes no claim to the validity of the theories themselves.

@yeroneem @eigenrobot Gravitational waves aren't just LIGO/VIRGO - their discovery has lead to huge insights into black hole perturbations, also new probes of cosmology, Gravitational theories beyond GR, and lead to the Stochastic Gravitational wave Background and related results

@BillAtkinss @eigenrobot Gravitational waves are a great experiment but I was under impression that the theory isn’t new! Same for the Higgs boson. But to put it into perspective, existence of molecules was conclusively proven like just 120 years ago…

@yeroneem @eigenrobot Gravitational waves? Quantum information? Graphene? The Higgs field? Multimessenger astronomy? AdS/CFT correspondence? Numerical relativity? QCD? Just because there isn't a clear "theory of everything" doesn't mean we haven't made huge progress.

@eigenrobot Last 20-25 years really were not that impressive in terms of big new theories, but you underestimate the number of scientific advances in applied physics and materials science which was necessary for modern computing and drugs.
