Haven’t written publicly about D.C. politics in a while, but this mayoral race is one of the most fascinating elections I’ve seen. A few thoughts on the coalitions, ranked-choice voting dynamics, and why this race may be more fluid than folks might think. @dwilliams88/the-most-important-number-in-d-c-s-mayoral-race-may-be-12-percent-e82f4e1e308a" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">medium.com/@dwilliams88/t…

These numbers should concern every District resident. Jobs are down, office vacancies are rising and housing sales are slowing. DC needs a Mayor that is both focused and prepared to address the tough challenges we are experiencing on day one. We have to make DC safer, support our small and local businesses, and grow our economy into one that works for everybody.

One of the smartest minds on the modern toolkit to build scaled public, social housing suggests @Janeese4DC campaign not engaging w/ how these projects happen in practice. Not surprising given her past track record on this was similarly unserious
Paul E Williams@PEWilliams_

@kristoncapps Correct. I have told them this many times.

@TommyWells There *is* a smart congestion measure that would push DC commuters towards mass transit and address the most rapidly increasing cause of congestion in DC: tax ride share and autonomous vehicles in downtown DC for every mile deadheaded. DC rideshare deadheading is 3.5 times 2019!

Congestion pricing should be regionally implemented. DMV traffic congestion is annually ranked #1 or #2 in the nation. Funds to be used for Metro - a regional responsibility.

@stanveuger @ismurray Bike lanes (and other traffic calming measures) *reduce* congestion...but that never stops people from other fields making authoritative pronouncements on transporation issues they do not understand.

@ismurray The bike lanes are good actually—insane to have four lane roads through residential neighborhoods.

Nota bene: don’t trust *anyone’s* internal poll.
Alex Koma@AlexKomaDC

New: @Janeese4DC just released an internal poll showing her up by 14 in the mayoral race: her lead stays at 12 even when they run a RCV simulation. This is quite the change from the public poll of the race, but I will say I’ve heard rumors of private polls with similar results.

A social housing mandate for 1/3 extremely low income, 1/3 very low income and 1/3 market-rate, with ground-floor retail going to progressive-aligned options like daycare — would likely mean zero housing being built. My understanding is this couldn't pencil anywhere in the DMV
Jordan Weissmann@JHWeissmann

I'm asking because I want to know if her supporters believe this is the model should try to pursue, and if so, what makes you think the projects would pencil or be able to offer "market-rate" rents that were attractive.

I think the 1st campaign is the image they’re trying to sell the public on, but increasingly, the curtain keeps getting pulled back on what will really happen if Janeese becomes Mayor under her Administration: unfunded pensions, MPD divestment, Social Housing, teen takeovers, etc
Matthew Yglesias@mattyglesias

There’s one campaign happening where George is a chill fun urbanist who loves bike lanes, and then there’s this other campaign where her political director is a hard-left ideologue who wants to abolish policing and she’s vowing to dismantle bonus pay for effective teachers.

Janeese’s inexplicable plan to raid pensions to pay for Social Housing would break DC’s 12% debt cap, downgrade DC’s bond ratings & push our city into a fiscal downward spiral. We can’t throw away everything we’ve worked to achieve & hand over Home Rule to Trump like this! (4/4)

DC has worked so hard over the last 30 years to manage our money responsibly and rebuild our city’s reputation. We’ve fully funded our pensions, established a 12% debt cap, built 60-days of cash reserves, and achieved AAA bond ratings. (3/4)

For me, the moment I realized that I couldn’t sit on the sidelines anymore was when Janeese finally revealed, at a live debate, that she planned to pay for her proposed 72,000 units of housing by raiding “billions of dollars” from DC retiree pensions. (2/4)

All of the momentum in DC’s Mayoral Primary has turned in the last week, leaving even Janeese’s die-hard supporters exasperated and realizing she’s not ready for the job. Polling now shows that @kenyanmcduffie is a narrow favorite as ranked choice preferences are tabulated. (1/4)

I live here, this is a lie. The park was popular with drug addicts and drunks a good 16+ years ago. It’s been quite popular with regular families since then, and is typically packed every summer weekend. And, unlike other spots in DC, there was never a homeless camp in this park. As always, the truth just isn’t enough with these guys. It’s sad, really.
Trump War Room@TrumpWarRoom

Meridian Hill Park before vs. after. For years, homeless camps and drug addicts took over the park. Now it's cleaned up and full of families again, thanks to @POTUS's executive order to make the capital safe and beautiful again. 🇺🇸
