All of this debate about living in the suburbs makes me realize that New England is so unique. Many of the suburbs around Boston have cute and walkable downtowns and are downright bucolic. The best suburbs in the country, along with metro NY and NJ.

Let’s just talk to the person in this meeting then! Who was it? What was the policy going to be? It’s the origin story for AI leaders who went all in for Trump and are now running a $100m+ super PAC for his allies so it seems pretty important to know exactly what was said.

Five years out, when billions of coding agents exist, software development will be largely solved. The traditional moat of “we have better engineers” disappears. Products will be copied, improved, and open-sourced almost instantly. Defensibility will shift away from code itself, toward distribution, data, brand, and community.

What’s more! A firm hiring 1 engineer has a possibly massive positive impact on a non-software first firm since a single engineer is so potent at this point. It’s an extremely good ROI and you don’t want to be the firm without that advantage.

There is not a clear point in this cycle where either firm is incentivized to cut jobs. Unless their customers have no more demand from the software that a competitor may threaten to satisfy (unlikely!) then the firm is still incentivized to keep enough staff.
