On Friday, we proudly authenticated the keels for the first three cutters in the Coast Guard’s new "Chief's Class" of Waterways Commerce Cutters: the future CGC Allen Thiele, CGC Fred Permenter and CGC Samuel Wilson. These cutters are vital for maintaining the Marine Transportation System, which supports over $5.4 trillion in economic activity. Connecticut is an important economic and defence partner for Australia, home to General Dynamics Electric Boat (where Virginia Class subs are built) and Pratt & Whitney (which produces the engines used in our fleet of F-35’s). The state is also now home to Birdon, a great Australian success story that specialises in making small boats in both Australia and the US for military and non-military purposes, including with the US Coast Guard.
