We didn't even talk about having a "node" back in the day. There was just the bitcoin software, and it was called "Bitcoin", and we started it whenever we wanted to use bitcoin. When we started "Bitcoin", a wallet window showed up, but you couldn't use it yet because it needed to catch up on the latest blocks. Even if just a few days had passed since the last sync, this might take a long time (today, those same blocks sync in mere seconds thanks to many iterative tech advances). This wait was annoying, and sometimes nerve racking depending on how urgently you needed to transact. I would sometimes start Bitcoin, sync it, and shut it down, just so the wait would be shorter the next time I actually wanted to transact. Eventually, this turned into just keeping the software running all the time, and then to moving it to a dedicated computer that could be powered on all the time, always ready. Behold the "node". Now that everything is so specialized, it's harder to appreciate the why of everything. People will get a node-in-a-box and just keep it running while not using it to transact, thinking it earns them some vague notion of a "vote" or makes them rugged sovereign individuals. But in fact, sovereignty comes from validating your own transactions with your own software, and that software can run on your own little laptop, and you can prune it so it doesn't require all that much storage. And, yes, you do not need to keep it running when you don't use it.

The idea was to get something that would fit our intern a 6ft tall guy with a bit of flesh on his bones. XL looked about right, but in reality it could fit another guy just like him inside it.
