@BitcoinKnobs

Bitcoin Knobs is a fork of Bitcoin Core that takes flexibility a step further. Where others decide what is "safe" or "reasonable," we believe in maximum choice

A major lesson from the Prime Trust fiasco is that legal protections (e.g. qualified custody) do not protect you from negligent custodians. Operational excellence and transparency are what matters. Does your exchange publish their financials? Do they have proof of reserves?

I've been running Knots since long before it was cool because I wanted more control over my nodes. datacarriersize=0 I'm eagerly awaiting something like @BitcoinKnobs that gives me *even more* granular control over my nodes, but I'm unsure if that project is going anywhere... Should I just fork Core and build it myself? (: x.com/druidian/statu…

From the start the idea was and still is obviously a silly joke. I mean come on, a ridiculous nym, a fork of Bitcoin, I'm knot asking you to take it seriously, but Bip444 needs your help! For crying out loud @dathon_ohm is out there saving Bitcoin and has less followers than me!

Serious question, how would BIP 444 work without turning on auto-updates so that your node knows when to invalidate blocks containing illegal content? And have we decided who gets to push those updates yet? Maybe we should just hand off that responsibility to the FBI.

Dr. Pepper Fork (soft drink fork). Potentially gave inspiration to other industries.

I'm sympathetic to the view that users should be given the option to set filters more explicitly, but that also adds complexity and bad UI. Users would basically have to choose between a set of filters at startup, and most wouldn't understand what any of that even means. Additionally, users are still able to tweak the relevant config related to the recent OP_RETURN controversy. It seems more problematic when a default is chosen if it's relevant to some consensus rule change. IIRC, Ethereum did this as a way to influence users and push through the fork related to The Dao. That was definitely bad. It seems like filters are something better dealt with via different implementations. For example, those who just want Core with more knobs can run @BitcoinKnobs.

@adam3us @Arthur_van_Pelt This is why @BitcoinKnobs is the only path forward. Editing bitcoin.conf is simply too much to ask. What if the user doesn't have a text editor?

Even if we survive this attack by the Death Eaters, this situation where I personally has'to save Harry Potter every few years needs to stop. Harry Potter cannot survive if he's dependent on one elf. Others need to step up more.

Roadmap for @BitcoinKnobs. We are going to rebase off Bitcoin Core. I think it's unlikely that Knots users will have a different opinion of what an ideal knob set should be for their node, compared to what the Knots maintainer(s) will provide. It was a fun idea to fork off of Knots, but the diff between Knots and Core is too wide. If you see @murchandamus post, he goes into this: x.com/murchandamus/s… 👉28,511 lines of code different across 550 files. Since most contributions are cherry-picked and PR'ing from Core, Knobs ends up with messy merge conflicts. We're adding an additional hurdle for people unnecessarily. Bitcoin Knobs will likely only appeal to power users who want a custom knob set, one likely to be rejected by both Core and Knots. It effectively removes maintainers as authorities of how users configure their nodes to the maximum degree. Hope everyone is onboard with the education and experimentation goals of this project. @tabconf to support this idea as long as there are developers and node runners interested. I don't believe this should be seen as a threat to either Core or Knots. PRs welcome!

Should Yeti build a tool to make it easy to sell Bitcoin Knobs (knots) as soon as they split?
