I’ve said this before- almost no bartenders are able to find games on TV. If you ask them they panic and look for the one person that knows how. Someone smarter than I needs to create a simple method any bar in the country can use.

Went to a sports bar today to watch the tournament. We'd been there before, good food, good beer. Walked in and they had zero tournament games on. "Working on it." After one beer they still had zero games on. Mostly baseball and football re-runs on the TVs...a few TVs with a tournament app on, but "free trial expired.". Obviously, we left. I still don't actually understand any of it. How do you own a "sports bar" and not plan on having all the games on all day on one of the most important sports days of the year?

Comparing The Road to Blood Meridian is like comparing Dubliners to Finnegans Wake or Faulkner’s short stories to his novels. Just totally different animals in terms of style and ease of reading.

I read the first hundred pages of The Road last year, and read the first hundred pages of Blood Meridian this year, and in both instances, gave up, because the books never clicked. Lyrical writing, but the characters are reduced to way down Maslow's hierarchy, and the tone is so relentlessly bleak, with almost no humanity breaking through, it was difficult to feel anything besides the flint clicking against the cold steel in the overwhelming darkness. I know many of you love it, but to me, it's overwrought, overstylized, and overhyped.

This time of year we get all the new ballpark food. And I’m sure a lot of it is great. But my feeling is, I don’t want something I need a knife and fork for, and I don’t want to feel like I need to wash my hands and face after eating it.

I used to work with a guy who was convinced he was the premier college hoops expert. Every year, after he was clearly going to lose in the office pool, he’d get angry and say we need to do a Sweet 16 bracket for $100 a person because that would show who the real experts were.

Around 2000 I was working at Enterprise in DC and I rented a car to a girl who played on the Mystics. Her personal car was a beater and broke down and she said she needed a car for odd jobs to make ends meet. So whatever jokes I’ve made about the league they’ve come a long way.
