A lot of people didn't get this but the Pearl Harbor joke was HUGE in our mutual friendship.
Basically, Japan was expected year after year to apologize to us for Pearl Harbor as some kind of humiliation ritual despite the fact we otherwise are besties as far as countries go.
Trump making the Pearl Harbor joke was a main stage political signal of "We're not offended by it, we can joke about it. It was a long time ago."
